| Hi! New here and needing some advice Hi everyone, my name is Cortney and my babygirls name is Bella. I just signed up yesterday with the group and have been reading through the threads, all of you guys seem very helpful to each other and I think that is great. I actually found the site trying to find out information for my baby Bella. I want to apologize for this being so long. She just turned 3 years old June 1st, and last Saturday was the first time I have ever had anything happen to her. So let me give you a run down of what happened. We were walking Bella around 6 PM (we live in Houston Texas so its been pretty hot outside), She was on her leash and she was walking past the neighbors patio, where they have a few dogs, which Bella is familiar with, there is one dog she doesnt like out of the 3 for some reason, it's the bigger of the 3 dogs and she is a very passive older dog, so it doesnt make sense why she always messes with her. Anyways, she basically just fell out on the ground on her side in front of their patio, the dogs were locked in the patio by a board that was up, so they couldnt reach her they could only see eachother. I ran to her and her eyes were open but she wasnt breathing and her heart was barely breathing and her tongue was out and i saw right away it was already very pale. I freaked out naturally and luckily my girlfriend was there and picked her up and began to breathe for her, we rushed her to the emergency vet up the street and they instantly put her on oxygen. She was given a shot because her heart rate went down to 60 and we almost lost her right then. After applying for the carecredit and getting her tested she came out with a very high lipase, which I have found is common for dogs with pancreatitis. They tested her for this and she came out negative for it, as well as many other tests. The only thing that she came out positive for was a mild case of anemia (due to fleas we cant seem to get rid of), and a UTI, and also the high lipase. The normal level is 200-1800 and hers is 2030. The dr kept asking if she ate something or got into something toxic, but she had been home all day in our room. There was nothing she could have gotten into. Has anyone ever had something like this happen? Or seen their dog just fall out like that? If so do you know what may have happened or could have been the cause? Since yorkies are so fragile I figured maybe there was something you guys knew or could help me with that maybe the dr didnt know because they dont deal with just Yorkies. Any advice would be great. And if you have any questions about her or us or whatever feel free to ask. Once again I am sorry this is so long, but she is my baby and while she is home now and doing better, she had some mild brain damage and she is walking a little funny. it may be permanent it may not, she gets better every day. This has been one of the most heartbreaking things I have ever experienced and I want to prevent this from happening again if possible. Thank you for your time, and any help I can get. And I am excited to be a part of your group!! Hope everyone is having a good weekend |

| Cortney, first thing that jumps out at me is the anemia from the fleas. It takes a lot of fleas over a period of time to cause this! I would say that the first thing you really need to do is get rid of them. They can be quite a problem in this area. I would take Bella out of the house one day while an exterminator comes in to kill any that might be in your home. At the same time you are doing that, ask your vet if perhaps you can give her a dose of Capstar to kill any fleas she has on her. You must make sure she is flea free prior to returning to your home. Then, you must use a flea preventative each month! That will keep them off of her. What heartworm and flea preventatives are you now using? I have had many pups with elevated lipase...that alone is not always an indicator of a problem. After being at the emergency vet, did you follow up with your regular vet? It sounds like perhaps you need to do further testing on her. There could be something going on besides the anemia that an emergency vet may not pick up on. Not sure what part of Houston you are in....but if you need referrals to vets, maybe we can help you find one if you do not have one already. If you have a good vet and feel further testing might be necessary, I highly recommend the board certified specialists at Gulf Coast Veterinary Hospital. www.gcvs.com Welcome to yt!

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Sorry to hear about your baby. Serum Lipase can increase due to heatstroke and/or exercise... I would do a follow up with my regular vet ASAP...

| Sorry it took so long to get back to your responses, had a lot going on. We have been trying to take care of the flea problem but it never fails by the end of the day I have to sit and pick off atleast 15 of them. She is also getting all kinds of dry flaky skin peeling off, not sure whats going on with her. We are going to be following up with the vet hopefully next week sometime. She is doing much better now, just walking a little funny, kind of to the left. That could be permanent I am not sure yet. I am just thankful she is still here. The emergency vet gave her advantage, atleast thats what they told me. But it doesnt seem to repel fleas at all or help with it for that matter, I have given her a flea bath with the hartz shampoo but that didnt do much good. Thank you for everyones advice, and for all the warm welcomes. |

| Has your vet ever given you Sentinel? I think that's the one Lucy takes and she never has a flea. My Westie takes Comfortis and it works wonderfully as well. I don't know how big your Yorkie is but my vet wouldn't give Lucy Comfortis due to her small size. |

There are other products you can use and LadyJ was right - if you have this bad of a flea problem they must be in the home and you want to get rid of them first there - on her - THEN use a monthly preventative that would keep them off her so she doesn't get sicker (and be miserable with the awful biting and itching) Good luck - I have no advise about the medical issues but want to wish her all the best | |

| Just a shot in the dark here but did you treat her for fleas in any way 24-48 hours before she had her episode? |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | While elevated lipase levels are normally associated with pancreatitis, it can also occur with certain liver and kidney diseases. Both liver and kidney disease can also be a cause of anemia.

| We had given her a flea dip a couple days prior to the episode happening yes. We also had used this spray our neighbor uses on her dogs called cedar oil. After everything happened we researched the product and it was actually 90 percent hydrated sylica and the other 10 percent was the cedar. I researched the hydrated sylica and have found some instances of an allergic reaction similar to what she had. So its possible she licked the product off her body after we sprayed it and had an adverse effect. There are so many posibilities of what could have happened I am not sure what to think about it. I just freak out about everything these days thinking anything could be the cause. |

| Sometimes elevated lipase can just be a sign of dehydration.
