this is very true as dex was so exhausted when he came home from hospital after 5 days as I think they do not rest much with other dogs barking and all the activity going on so when they get home all they want to do is sleep

She slept in bed with us and slept most of the night.
Pixie even knows bc she is being real gentle with Daisy.

I gave her the denolsyl and about an hour later gave her white rice like the vet said and an hour later her pepcid and in 2 hr I have to give the flaygl. I hope she doesn't throw up. It is enough to make me puke thinking about the meds.

I just came across some horrible news online if it is cirrhosis of the liver that is the last stage of liver disease and it is irreversible.
I am just so depressed over this what could of went wrong.
Did the medication do this or did Daisy have an underlying health issue that went undetected.
I am not going to be online most of the day bc I am spending time with her. I will updated and let you all know how she is doing tonight.

Please be praying for her. Thanks for your everyone support it means a lot to me.
If she had an underlying liver disease prior to this drug it would have shown up on the blood as ALT and ALP as they would have been high if it was this bad. Dogs with shunts usually have high alt and alp not just high bile acids. If they are below 100 like my dd then the alt and alp usually will not be high as hers have never been high.

All medications are processed through the liver

Think positive as the liver is forgiving. Lacy is doing well still today with it. You just have to get her over this by the right diet and liver support.

The lepto vaccine has been linked to some cases of kidney and liver damage. Doxycycline (and all tetracyclines) must be used with caution in patients with an underlying kidney or liver disease because of the way it is metabolized. It stays in the system longer and increases the risk of drug toxicity.

I won't go in to an off label prescription debate here (re the flagyl). Suffice to say that there is probably at least 1 medication in your own cabinet that has been prescribed off label. It's very, very common.

Dwerten, not all meds are metabolized by the liver. Many are broken down by the kidneys.

I hope Daisy is feeling better being at home. I'm sure you feel better having her there.

so not all drugs affect the liver as thought everything gets processed through the liver? I thought that is why liver shunt is such a problem as things are bypassing the liver thus creating toxins in the body to build up?

so rhetts mama don't you think dogs with underlying liver disease should be treated with caution on giving any medication and why they warn about this in humans as well as dogs?

I will not get into a debate with you about medications again. Yes, all blood and therefore all meds, pass through the liver. But not all meds are metabolized (broken down) by the liver.

Until the true reason for Daisy's elevated enzymes are known, it's irresponsible IMO to start bombarding the OP with what she should be doing or to start accusing the vet of being at fault.

Joyce- how is Daisy feeling today? I hope you both got some rest now that she's home.

Diagnosis: Doxcycline liver Hepatopathy (presumed)OMG!!!!!
Are they serious???
So basically they are suspicious that the doxycycline did this to Daisy.
Will the flagel take care of the lyme?
the dog food they want her on is Iams veterinary formula bc it is 8% fat
They don't want her on anymore fat than 8-9%

Does anyone know what exactly does it mean when a liver is small? does that mean the cells are not repairing itself?
Could the drug of done this to her?
Could the drug of damaged her liver so much it can't repair.
Boy do I have questions for them tom.

I am going to spend some time with Daisy plz pray for her.
I am so upset to think that I was giving my dog this poison (Doxycycline)
I will never use that drug again
I think rhetts mama missed the vets diagnosis so thought I would bump it

Dwerten- a presumptive diagnosis is NOT the same as a definitive one. Until the further tests are done, I stand by my statement that what you are pushing is irresponsible.

Also, I never said that any med should be prescribed without consideration to liver status. Please go back and re-read my post before you jump down my throat again.

Now- where is that freaking ignore button on this forum?

this seems like some good info - omg I am so upset in reading this though as the rimadyl info said it can cause problems 2 weeks after taking it and the owner of the little dog that died two weeks after taking it came to mind that we all thought might have been a spider bite maybe it was not a bug bite after all

http://wvc.omnibooksonline.com/data/.../2010_V137.pdf

Carprofen (i.e., Rimadyl) causes hepatotoxicity in dogs, especially Labrador retrievers.
The histologic changes seen in carprofen hepatotoxicity can resemble chronic hepatitis, so be sure that
you have an adequate history. Also, be aware that hepatotoxicity may not be seen until 1-2 weeks after
starting a drug; in fact, the patient may have stopped taking the medication several days before clinical
signs of toxicity occur.

Right now all I want to do is get Daisy's health back and at this point I don't care about the bill or who's fault it is.They did give me a break on the bill and I didn't even ask. I was charged for 2 days instead of 4.
The bill was still really high with all the testing but my husband and I have decided that we can skip our trip south bc right Now Daisy's health is our main concern and she might need more testing and hopitalization.
I have not gotten the prescription dog food yet bc everything was closed.
They told me to feed her white rice this morning.
She did say that she wants Daisy on no more than 8% fat.
Worthy of a bump. Perhaps it might stop this constant need for some people to have more attention paid to them, although, sadly I doubt it. Seems to be a repetitive theme here.

Again, my suggestion is to get back to focusing on positive thoughts for Daisy's recovery.

Praying Daisy feels better. I hope she has a good day with you and when you are able to post again, it is with happy news.
