All medications are processed through the liver Think positive as the liver is forgiving. Lacy is doing well still today with it. You just have to get her over this by the right diet and liver support. Last edited by dwerten; 06-22-2010 at 05:20 AM.

| Donating YT 4000 Club Member | The lepto vaccine has been linked to some cases of kidney and liver damage. Doxycycline (and all tetracyclines) must be used with caution in patients with an underlying kidney or liver disease because of the way it is metabolized. It stays in the system longer and increases the risk of drug toxicity. I won't go in to an off label prescription debate here (re the flagyl). Suffice to say that there is probably at least 1 medication in your own cabinet that has been prescribed off label. It's very, very common. Dwerten, not all meds are metabolized by the liver. Many are broken down by the kidneys. I hope Daisy is feeling better being at home. I'm sure you feel better having her there.

so rhetts mama don't you think dogs with underlying liver disease should be treated with caution on giving any medication and why they warn about this in humans as well as dogs? Last edited by dwerten; 06-22-2010 at 06:57 AM.

Until the true reason for Daisy's elevated enzymes are known, it's irresponsible IMO to start bombarding the OP with what she should be doing or to start accusing the vet of being at fault. Joyce- how is Daisy feeling today? I hope you both got some rest now that she's home.

| Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Dwerten- a presumptive diagnosis is NOT the same as a definitive one. Until the further tests are done, I stand by my statement that what you are pushing is irresponsible. Also, I never said that any med should be prescribed without consideration to liver status. Please go back and re-read my post before you jump down my throat again. Now- where is that freaking ignore button on this forum?

| this seems like some good info - omg I am so upset in reading this though as the rimadyl info said it can cause problems 2 weeks after taking it and the owner of the little dog that died two weeks after taking it came to mind that we all thought might have been a spider bite maybe it was not a bug bite after all http://wvc.omnibooksonline.com/data/.../2010_V137.pdf Carprofen (i.e., Rimadyl) causes hepatotoxicity in dogs, especially Labrador retrievers. The histologic changes seen in carprofen hepatotoxicity can resemble chronic hepatitis, so be sure that you have an adequate history. Also, be aware that hepatotoxicity may not be seen until 1-2 weeks after starting a drug; in fact, the patient may have stopped taking the medication several days before clinical signs of toxicity occur. Again, my suggestion is to get back to focusing on positive thoughts for Daisy's recovery.
