It is not like there are dogs all over the place having this same problem...and right now we don't even know for sure that is the problem.

ALL medicines have side effects and I can promise you that at least ONE dog has had a reaction to each medicine in use. You just don't always see them.

Things need to be weighed carefully.

I have no idea if the vet was at fault...I am having a hard time understanding that...but if the vet says so...well I suppose. I just totally don't understand a reaction to a vaccine being a precursor to possible reaction to one antibiotic. Again...maybe I am missing something. Who knows.

Bottom line right now is getting Daisy better...no matter the cause! I am quite sure that if the vet was that forthcoming about blaming the other vet that they will adjust her bill.
Let's hope the vet adjusts the bill unlike what happened to my friend when derm mixed ketaconazole and ivermectin which is off label thus causing her dog to go into a coma and almost die and she was stuck with a 3,000 bill and yep the derm admitted she made a mistake then pointed the finger at the specialty hospital for causing dog to get pneumonia after suctioning her trachea while sedating her to stop the seizures and NEVER ante up the bill so my friend was stuck with a 3,000 bill for a screw up where the hospital was trying to save the dogs life from the derm screw up but derm never took responsibility of the bill my friend had to so sorry not all of them ante up for the bill and the poor pet owner is left paying the bill and emotionally traumatized from the screw up

Obviously the vet feels it was the drug as they stated it

and yes I will continue to advocate that dogs with liver issues should not have certain drugs or the owner better do some research before putting that drug in that dogs mouth. Obviously that was not Joyce's choice here as she trusted her vet and that they read the file and knew what would be best for Daisy

could be something to do with adjuvunct being used in the vaccine that caused the reaction

I will email Jean to see if she knows since she does alot of research on vaccines

i'm guessing Daisy is 20ish lbs and was on 100mg of doxy twice a day right? that is the correct dose (5mg per lb) to treat lyme.

also to diagnose lyme disease they do a snap test. only a few drops of blood are needed. they are mixed with some blue stuff and poured into the test. wait 8-10 minutes and results show up as dots. here is what it looks like http://www.idexx.com/view/xhtml/en_u...its&SSOTOKEN=0 i didn't read the page, just saw it was from idexx and had a picture.
yes I am aware that drugs are used off label such as ivermectin but does not mean it is always safe. I am also aware that atopica is used off label for ibd dogs but when i called novartis they said they will not advocate it as they never ran the trials for that specific reason so cannot recommend its use for ibd. Now should the vet tell the pet owner this so they can make that decision - yes but do they NOPE

My understanding about the use of flagyl in lyme is that it is only used when the the time between infection and treatment is short. Maybe in this case, the treatment of choice was doxycycline if the symptoms of Lyme had not shown up for a while.

Joyce said that doxycycline was contraindicated because of the use of the lepto vaccine - something I cannot seem to verity or find info on either

Yes Deb, they did blood work when they found the lyme and everything seemed ok. She had small amounts of the bacteria she said that it was in the early stages.

The Vet said looking at Daisy's files she came across Daisy having a sever reaction to the lepto and that she came to the conclusion that Daisy should of never been put on doxycycline. Why I am not sure.
Right now all I want to do is get Daisy's health back and at this point I don't care about the bill or who's fault it is.They did give me a break on the bill and I didn't even ask. I was charged for 2 days instead of 4.
The bill was still really high with all the testing but my husband and I have decided that we can skip our trip south bc right Now Daisy's health is our main concern and she might need more testing and hopitalization.
I have not gotten the prescription dog food yet bc everything was closed.
They told me to feed her white rice this morning.
She did say that she wants Daisy on no more than 8% fat.

Cry

Daisy looked awful last night she didn't even act excited to be home she wouldn't even acknowledge Pixie and most of all she did not sit with my husband in his recliner She always sits in between his legs and watches tv with her Dad but not last night. She kept whimpering every now and then, she just didn't feel good.
She slept in bed with us and slept most of the night.
Pixie even knows bc she is being real gentle with Daisy.

I gave her the denolsyl and about an hour later gave her white rice like the vet said and an hour later her pepcid and in 2 hr I have to give the flaygl. I hope she doesn't throw up. It is enough to make me puke thinking about the meds.

I just came across some horrible news online if it is cirrhosis of the liver that is the last stage of liver disease and it is irreversible.
I am just so depressed over this what could of went wrong.
Did the medication do this or did Daisy have an underlying health issue that went undetected.
I am not going to be online most of the day bc I am spending time with her. I will updated and let you all know how she is doing tonight.

Please be praying for her. Thanks for your everyone support it means a lot to me.

I'm also sending prayers for Daisy and the family. Please give her some extra huggins from us.

I'm praying that today is a good day for Daisy. Sometimes when they've been hospitalized for a few days, they need extra rest and relaxation to get back on track. I hope to hear soon that things are starting to go in the positive direction and we are keeping Daisy in our prayers.

ok thanks so it was the med then that caused it

Jean responded back to me and said she does not understand what they are meaning by the lepto and that antibiotic so you may want to ask what their reasoning is with those two things and I have looked like others on here to see the correlation of the two and have found nothing either. I just emailed the two vet groups I am on today asking this question as well.

The only thing i can come up with is because she had a reaction to lepto she is susceptible to have reactions to other things that are strong meds or vaccines as her system is very sensitive to things. Also from what you describe about her having health issues can leave them susceptible to reactions as I know my dd has reacted to things like simplicef getting hives, metacam, benedryl, etc so i have to be very careful with her as she has a poor immune system hence she has atopic dermatitis and hypothyroid both autoimmune diseases. Maybe this is the case with daisy. Usually if their immune system is not real strong they are susceptible to things more so than a healthy dog so may be why she caught the lyme disease too.
