DR. DODD’S HOMEMADE DIET


This diet is an updated homemade diet that has been submitted by a nutritionist from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. The nutritionist spoke with Dr. Dodd about the changes recommended to make the diet more balanced and complete. Dr. Dodd has given permission to post this modified diet to the liver shunt lists:

LIVER FRIENDLY DIET (canine)

1 pound cod filets
1/2 pound sweet potatoes
1/2 pound white potatoes
1/2 pound green beans
1/2 pound carrots
1 Tablespoon canola oil
3 tablets (750 mg) Calcium carbonate
1 Capsule Vitamin E (100 IU)
1000 mg Omega 3 fatty acids
1/2 Vitamin B complex human vitamin tablet

Mix all ingredients together until it is well blended. This will give you approximately 8 cups of food. Depending on the size of your dog, you can double or triple the recipe.
With liver disease try and feed in 3 or 4 small meals, the last one being at bedtime. This puts less stress on the liver. Put one-meal portions in baggies and freeze what you won't use in 3 days. You should be able to cook once a week and freeze what you don't use. This recipe will stay fresh for 3 days in the fridge.

Cod fillets or white low-fat fish has a specific amino acid that actually helps heal the liver. Soy and fat-free cottage cheese also have this specific amino acid, but should not be used in a diet until the pre- and post-meal bile acid test comes back in a normal range.


Calcium carbonate is 40% elemental calcium. If another calcium compound is selected, the percentages vary and the dose should be recalculated for accuracy. Please use canola oil as other oils do not contain similar amounts of linoleic acid. Please note that this is still a low fat diet. The vitamin E, fish oils, B complex vitamins, and L-carnitine are suggestions that we make for patients with liver disease, as these animals have altered absorption of these nutrients. This recipe can be used for long term feeding without reservation. The recipe makes about 1400 grams of food containing 1150 kcalories.[/B]

I asked her about cod and she said no fish bc it is too high in omga 3 .
oh my gosh I am so confused.
unless she is not that sure herself what to feed Daisy. She is supposed to research for me and let me know tom. until then she wants me to fee her boiled rice and chicken. tom morning! If Daisy throws up I have to bring her back and away we go again.

I hate to see anyone confused. Just feed her what she said and relax...Daisy needs for you to be relaxed tonight.

I guess do what she says but fish is the most highly digestible protein and lowest in protein along with soy. Liver disease dogs are on either fish or vegetarian diets.

There is a reason dr dodds diet is called the liver cleansing diet

If liver enzymes are high then liver cleansing diet is what is needed.

Most vets do not know about nutrition sadly

some use rc hepatic and many do not like the hill's L/D as too high in fat for a yorkie but since she is not a yorkie may be ok

I have always been curious on the rc hepatic - here it is and it is soy as a protein just like the purina ha is soy based

yep cod is the best and you can get in frozen section at costco just bought it as i pill dd with cod and demi gets a little cod on her food as she is a picky eater. I will not use tilapia as it is a farm raised fish. I get the wild cod no farm raised as wild is less contaminated.

yikes hill's L/D 24% fat and it is pork - alot of dogs do not like the taste of this one either

Daisy is on Denostl 225 mg 1 times a day
Flagel 225 mg 1/4 tab 2 times a day to prevent bacterial hepatitis What??I am reading her discharge papers and about ready to flip a gord.
Diagnosis: Doxcycline liver Hepatopathy (presumed)OMG!!!!!

So basically they are suspicious that the doxycycline did this to Daisy.
Will the flagel take care of the lyme?
the dog food they want her on is Iams veterinary formula bc it is 8% fat
They don't want her on anymore fat than 8-9%

Does anyone know what exactly does it mean when a liver is small? does that mean the cells are not repairing itself?
Could the drug of done this to her?
Could the drug of damaged her liver so much it can't repair.
Boy do I have questions for them tom.

I am going to spend some time with Daisy plz pray for her.

thinking maybe C can help more on this as the low fat leads me to believe it is fatty liver disease - isn't that chirrosis? I am at work so did not get a chance to read the link.

Here is the good thing is the liver can repair itself

what is the protein percentage on this diet? As she needs low protein as well. Can you post the link to this food so i can check it out

yeah i would not be happy if this drug did this. I would be be having a long talk with the vet about the bill.

do a search for myfairlacy and liver and I will try to find the link as C posted it on one of the threads i was on as i wanted to read more on it
