My collie had demodex mites once. I didn't know you could diagnose from a fecal? My vet had to take a scraping. By the way, all dogs have these mites but they normally live down in the hair follicle. When they get out of control, they cause problems hair loss on the surface. It usually signals some kind of problem with the immune system although some dogs are born with it and battle it all their lives. But your new guy has had a lot of stress so I'd imagine that once he's settled in things will get better! Good luck!

nope wrong. they actually did a fecal with giardia and sent it off to i believe antech and it came back with the positive for demodex results. it was NOT a skin scrape acutally. i would know i looked at the test results from the lab as i do work in the clinic.

Rachel, you may want to double check his chart. Demodex is diagnosed with a skin scraping. The mites live in the hair follicles, not the digestive tract.

yeah this is what i always thought too

also my friend whose dog had demodex forever her dog never itched so not sure they itch with demodex it is usually a stinky wet spot as that is what hers had. Scabies (sarcoptic mange) is when the dog is really itchy as i think you had a thread stating he was itchy.

I have never heard of demodex nor sarcoptic mange being tested by a fecal. My friend never mentioned that in dealing with it for years. It was always a skin scraping at dermatologist. The derm just did it in front of me for dee dee this last time as she wanted to rule out demodex she said since dd has had skin issues recently with the staph.

I always thought it was parasites in stool like coccidia and giardia.

the dog could have ingested some by licking at his skin i guess, but i would want a skin scraping done on the areas to be sure that is what he has. all dogs have mites, its just dogs with a compromised immune system that get bothered by it. a lot of the demodex i've seen is on the head and ears. it looks like hair is missing but the area isn't always red/inflammed/gross looking. on puppies it just looks like thinning hair on their head.

anyway, i'd get a skin scrapping done just to be sure.

what do you think about doing the advantix and promeris within days of each other . I know promeris can make dogs sick as derm told me this when i recommended it for my friends dog so i would imagine it mixed in with advantix that could definitely make them sick

i have no idea about advantix and promeris for mange treatment. i've never actually heard of promeris (unless its also called something else).

i think when i worked for general practice the vet gave revolution and oral ivermectin. That was at least 5 years ago now so i'm not too sure. didn't really deal too much with mange treatments in the surgery ward.

I have a foster with demodex. He suddenly got this dry area around his eye and I had a feeling that was what it was. Sure enough....took him in and the skin scraping showed those nasty little critters.

Anyway.....he has been treated for the past two weeks with Goodwinol ointment. He went to the vet today and his scraping was negative! He will continue that ointment for two weeks and then have another skin scraping. If that is negative, his treatment will be over!

promeris is new being used for demodex and revolution is being used for sarcoptic mange. When dd started with all her issues they used revolution to rule out sarcoptic mange as sometimes hard to see mites on scrapings so they wanted to be sure since she was around my grandma's yorkie that had scabies.

My friend used ivermectin and interceptor for years with her demodex dog and i recommended promeris and it worked within months she is so happy as her dog had this wet stinky smelly spot on her back. It was gross but no other issues just that. She is a pet store puppymill dog came from same pet store dex came from before we knew better.

I am just concerned mixing two topical treatments that are strong on a little one could be a problem especially since promeris can make some dogs sick

i'll have to look up promeris to see what its about. and your right, the revolution was for sarcoptic mange now that i think of it.

i just remember having to dose out liquid ivermectin and sucrose (or dextrose...can't remember which) into syringes. very messy and sticky process.

yeah and i do think ivermectin is off label use in dogs. My friends dog almost died of ivermectin toxicity as derm mixed ketaconazole and ivermectin drugs - not derm i use. The ketoconazole broke the blood barrier wall allowing the ivermectin to go straight to the brain and she went into a massive seizure then coma. It was HORRIBLE. Those drugs should never be mixed. They had to sedate her to stop seizures and suction trachea and she ended up with pneumonia. She had to pay for a 3,000 bill and derm said oops sorry - GREAT

So when the promeris worked she called me from my derm office and was so excited and said it worked it worked she is finally after years demodex free I learned about it from another yorkie group where owner used it and recommended it so i called our derm and asked her about it for sophie. She said it makes some dogs sick but worth try so we were really nervous after the whole ivermectin toxicity but sophie never got sick and she is doing so well and my friend is so happy.

I am always nervous when i see someone mix two flea products as Sonja on here lost sunny to that a year ago and it was horrible. She never used flea protection before as we do not really need to in cali. She went to a yorkie meet up out of state and mixed two flea products and he died. It was horrible
