the dog could have ingested some by licking at his skin i guess, but i would want a skin scraping done on the areas to be sure that is what he has. all dogs have mites, its just dogs with a compromised immune system that get bothered by it. a lot of the demodex i've seen is on the head and ears. it looks like hair is missing but the area isn't always red/inflammed/gross looking. on puppies it just looks like thinning hair on their head.

anyway, i'd get a skin scrapping done just to be sure.
