Yorkie Yakker | Cushings Disease.... We were told about a lady that was moving and couldn't take her Yorkie with her. When we went to see the yorkie we found a little 3lb girl with no hair, her mom had her sister and one other female yorkie and said that this one just couldn't go with her and that she had cushings disease. Kia stole my heart immediately. She has no hair on hair on her torso and was pretty weak. Straight to the vet we went and came away from there with meds for the cushings, prednisone in case she won't eat, and the promise she will get better. Does anyone know anything about this disease? We have had her a month now, she is stronger, we have had to adjust the mitotane but finally have a dose she can take. Right now she is on an antibiotic for her teeth, she has to have all of them removed! She is 9 years old btw. She just sleeps all day long, only gets up to eat and go outside to pee. (She is totally potty trained!) I wonder if she is depressed because she doesn't have her sister and the other dog? Or her original mom? I feel so bad for her!! How could anyone leave this little girl? She lets us hold her but isn't really interested in staying on our laps for long, we have other dogs, small ones, two other yorkies, all of our dogs have accepted her just fine, she just won't interact with any of them or us. When will she get her hair back? |

| Aww! Bless you for taking her in... she sounds like a pretty sick little dear, with the Cushings and her teeth... I think it can take a few months to a year before she can really feel comfortable. Mainly I wouldn't expect too much until she's given a clean bill of health. Being in a new place and being sick is very stessful for her. Give her time to get to feeling better, then maybe she'll be a bit more interactive... Good Luck with her....

Yorkie Yakker | Thank you so much for your quick replies! Let me ask, is 9yrs very old for a yorkie? I've got two others but, one I got as a tiny baby, he's only 2 yrs old and the other one is another rescue that is about 5 years old. (the other rescue is in fantastic health, he was found wandering a neighborhood) Also, does Cushings ad years also? My poor little girl, she sure is a little sweetheart, she won't sleep with us so my daughter and I have been taking turns sleeping on the floor next to her little bedroom that we set up, it's a real nice sized canvas playpen that we got for the baby yorkie to play in when we take him to the park with us. Kia just won't come out and sleep with us but she knows we are right there for her! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh my gosh ! Bless you for taking in this sweetheart, you're incredible! I'm in Phx, and my Wylie has Atypical Cushings. So, was she being treated at all, previously...I'm assuming no ? Poor baby. The most important thing is to be w/ a Vet who truly understands Cushings as it's such a complicated disease. If she is on her initial dosing of Mito/Lyso - are you having another ACTH stim in 4-6 weeks or so? Also very important - the vet should have checked her thyroid, there is a very good chance she is hypothyroid and this could also explain some of her extreme lethargy. Was this checked? Many times, it's a good idea to get a fasting glucose as well, and cholesterol. As for "does Cushings add years?" -- well, in a way. The problem is mostly that it goes undiagnosed and misdiagnosed. However, if it is treated and managed properly, dogs can lead very full lives, often having their Cushing symptoms managed -- it can take a long time to titer the meds just right though, so hang in there. For example, next month it will be a year since Wylie's diagnosis, and we are still titering meds - it's a constant and ongoing process. If you need a vet recommendation, my vet is in Tempe - and I can let you know...but if you already have a good one, then great .

Yorkie Yakker | We live in Phoenix also! Our Pediatrician (Vet) did check her thyroid, also did the glucose and yes we have had the ACTHstim test done several times already....no she wasn't treated before I got her. (the lady said it was a waste as far as she was concerned) It is a little spendy, but, oh well, I can't just let her languish with this. Thank you so much, I know we can pull her through this! We have also had some x-rays done, her hind legs are totally stiff with arthritis, she's not sure if she originally had an injury on one of them. We can put her on a pain med but have to get the mitotane somewhat regulated first. Poor little girl, she is so tiny! I can't imagine letting a little 3lb yorkie get in this condition, well, I can't imagine letting any dog get in this condition to be honest. I'm glad I have her.... |

I hear you on the spendy! For the last year, we've had ACTH stims every 4-6 weeks or so, plus thyroid levels, plus meds. With the diagnostic process, we've spent about 5k this year on our Wylie. He likes to spend. Her poor little legs...with all that cortisol running thru her system, I'm sure it really did a number on her joints; that's just awful about the previous owner. Another less toxic thing that can help w/ the coat in Cushings dogs is Melatonin - did the vet mention that? Cheap, easy to find - make sure it's the regular kind, not sustained release. Lot's of Cushingoid dogs are on this as adjunct therapy.

| Bless you and your family, you did and are doing a wonderful thing, giving this precious soul the chance at life... I don't know much about Cushings, but Wylie's Mom def. does I do know that Dasiquin by Nutramax is excellent for joints. Wonder if she can have it? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | How wonderful for you to take this baby and give her a loving home. My pom had Cushing's and she lived about 3 years after diagnosis. She passed away last year at 12 years of age. She had an amazingly thick coat so she never looked bald, just thinned out. Once she was on medicine her coat did come back in where it had gotten thin. She did sleep a lot and only get up to eat and drink. I am so glad you have her!!

| What a wonderful person you are to take Kia in and take such wonderful care of her! I am so touched by your story!! As for her being a bit shy right now, often when pups are moved around they get like that. Sometimes it takes a while for them to settle in and realize that they are in a permanent home. I am sure she will adjust well as it sounds like your home has lots of love in it! I have a foster right now who has been diagnosed with pseudo cushings which is similar to cushings, but not the illness itself. He has very little hair on his trunk. We started him on Melatonin, which is what Wylie's Mom suggested, a few weeks ago and they said it might take 6 - 8 weeks for his hair to grow, if it does. Welcome to YT! I am sure you will find lots of helpful information here!
