Decided to jump in here. Think I'd cancal Fri appt. & get 2nd opinion. This has been going on quite while & you said yourself your vet doesn't seem to know what to do or doesn't really seem to care. 2 good reasons for 2nd. opinion in my book.

well one way or another i will need bloodwork done so i may as well keep my apt (my other dog is gettin her yearly vaccinations also fri), and i emailed purdue and they answered and said they sent my email to the vet school and they will get back to me soon. also they said that i cant take my pet there unless my vet calls them for referral or consultation first so i may need him after all at least for that. I tried looking for a small dog vet in my area and i couldnt find anything online, so i will prob have to call around and see who i like best. Can you just meet vets and decide who you like before taking your pet there? lol that would be nice cuz there are a few in lafayette area and i wanna make sure if i am switching that i am gettin the best i can so i dont have to switch again

timmy is extra excited tonight. Its SO cute! times like this not only make it worth it, but make me def believe that whatever this stupid problem is, it CANT possibly be that serious when hes so happy and healthy otherwise. Still need to know though, cuz i just CANT stand not knowing the answer to things, and i think it started at our house, so i feel like theres a cure of some kind

Kay person is back. I am traveling from Florida to Virginia on to West Virginia with 4 yorkies 1 1/2 years to 10+ years old. This is my second set of adults. I had a trio prior to this. (yorkies are like potato chips, you cant have just one) It is shocking to me that the vet didn't want renal function and hepatic function blood values on this little guy. Given his questionable background, that should have been the first baseline information gathered. These little creatures are notorious for bad teeth that lead to bacterial gingivitis, leading to coronary valve disease and poor cardiac function that eventually efffects their kidneys, liver and overall health. Is there a vetrinary school close to you? I had great success with one of my first dogs by taking him to OSU vetrinary school of medicine. They Brainstormed and came up with diagnosis and treatment that sustained my little guy for two more healthy years. My "hometown vet" wanted euthanasia, but I refused. My Vet was gracious enough to let OSU lead him in treating my dog. The cost was less than the multiple trips to the vet and emergency vet clinic. If you can connect with a school like that, the "Braintrust" was invaluable. I think you are making good choices, and this forum is awesome. Good Luck and I will continue to follow.

i emailed a good vet place in my area, and they emailed me back right away saying that they showed it to all their vets on staff, and what my vet has done is the same tests they would do. they suggested that i try to take him to purdue, which was prob my next step. Only thing is, aside from purdue needing a referral from my vet, its EXPENSIVE ive been told (even the school). So after the bloodwork..if it doesnt tell us anything i will probably just keep feeding him like i am, or try mashing/blending his kibble and see how that goes for a while until i can save up some more money. He is so happy and healthy otherwise, so i dont think this problem is bothering him at all, or that its that serious. maybe hes just a snotty boy who needs some benedryl like the first vet suggested lol i wont try that for quite a while but we'll see
he is SO cute when hes happy and excited

i will say im SO glad i got him, despite the problem, b/c i know SEVERAL ppl that would have given up on him long ago and he would either be back in the system or homeless
DOGS are like BABIES...you wouldn't give your baby away b/c it has health problems! so why is it ok to do that for your dog~!!!

Default is it allergies after all!?

Allergies and Allergens

Surprisingly, dogs suffer from many of the same allergens as people do. These can include foods, milk products, pollen, grass, trees, types of fabrics, types of rubbers or plastics, dust, dust mites, mold, other pets, pet dander and flea bites.
Symptoms of Allergies

Dogs suffering from allergies will display their symptoms through itching and various skin issues. This may appear as excessive scratching, rubbing their face or body against furniture, corners or the floor, hair losshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif or excessive damage to the skin. Your dog's feet may become irritated, especially if he's excessively chewing on them.
Post-nasal Drip

Post-nasal drip occurs when a dog's sinuses secrete an excessive amount of mucus, which drains down the throat rather than being relieved through the nose. It may or may not occur simultaneously with allergies. However, it is not uncommon for dogs to display this symptom when suffering from year-round or seasonal inhaled allergies or food allergies. In most cases, post-nasal drip can be managed with medication in addition to isolating and removing the cause.
Symptoms of Canine Post-nasal Drip

The most common sign of post-nasal drip is constant swallowing to relieve congestion or drainage. He may also wheeze and cough, or have an extremely foul breath. Lastly, he may appear to have a lack of enthusiasm for feeding time. All of this can be due to post-nasal drip in the beginning stages or after an infection occurs from the excessive bacteria and mucus.

Default bloodtest

Did the bloodtests today. I dont really understand any of it at all! but the doc said everything was normal except an elevated level of something... which apparently points us back to allergies of some sort. No idea what kind of allergy, as it can be a billion different things! but it still is most likely a food allergy i guess. So now im gonna go through the 3 foods he's been on since i got him and see if there are any similar ingredients. If that doesnt help, its an elimination diet eventually or doing a allergy panel that will steer us in right direction. Im not too worried about it b/c he is so happy and healthy anyway, but i really would like to get rid of the allergen if possible so he can be EVEN BETTER!

i know this was an old post, but i had to respond. Now that we are leaning toward allergies, i printed lists of all ingredients in all 4 foods he has eaten since i got him, and trying to narrow down what it could be. Most of the foods had same ingredients for most part, but the canned food (he didnt throw up on) does not have corn or corn gluten meal or corn meal...ALL other 3 had one of those in it. Thats my best lead right now, and if not ill have to do more research. The Purina he was on didnt have any of t he same ingredients other than vitamins that were similar to the other 3 foods, but that food made him throw up WORSE..so that could have been corn or could have been the salmon (main ingredient) being to powerful for him..so many options and they all take so much time...vet said it could take 6-8 wks to see full results once the allergen is identified and removed!!! prob will do the allergen test thing to steer us in direction if the corn thing doesnt work. Im going to blend up the dry food hes on now first thou, and see if that works. If it does, it may not be a food allergen after all. His problem is scratching and nasal drip i believe (i think that causes the sticky throw up)

blood cannot determine food allergy just elimination diet can so do not waste your money on a blood allergy test. IBD is a food intolerance which is what i have said all along food allergy is when they itch from a food not vomit from it

well he does itch around his mouth and licks/bites his front paws, which is a symptom of a food allergy. i think the vomit is only b/c of excess snot problems of some kind. Im not gonna do the blood allergy test until later if my elimination gets me nowhere. Vet said it will just steer us in right direction with what types of food hes most allergic to. But i looked it up and it says most food allergies are caused by beef, chicken, corn, milk products, and fish, and a few other things. So im starting with the corn bc its the only one the wet food didnt have that the rest did. After that ill change away from chicken probably and see if that helps. The salmon food he was on made him worse, and doesnt list chicken, but it does list animal fat with somethin weird in it, and my other food listed chicken fat with the same weird thing in it, so i wonder if there was chicken fat in the salmon diet. Im still trying, but im gonna do the blended kibble first to see if he can eat that without throw up. Im NOT looking forward to months upon months of diet trials. And all these ppl say the food has JUST basics in it, when in reality it has a CRAP LOAD of other stuff in it. Most of the ingredients in all the foods ive tried are same!! So we'll see.

Default Yorkie Vomiting

Congratulations on getting your Yorkie! I recently got a male Yorkie pup from a really nice lady! They are a lot of fun to have around! Plus they are one of the great breed of dogs that you could ever own! As far as the vomiting thing goes, I would take him to a vet to make sure that there is something going on with his digestive system or something. Yorkies have very sensitive digestive systems and stuff. As far as Purina food, that is a very good brand! I have always used Purina food with my animals and they absolutely love it and it's healthy for them! But like I said, take your Yorkie to the vet and get checked to see if there is something going on that may be causing the vomiting. God Bless and good-luck!

blood cannot determine food allergy only environmental allergy so again it is a waste of money and it is not cheap to get this done it cost about $400

Default blended food

well i blended up his Royal canin 1/8 cup with 1/8 cup water last nite, covered and put in fridge. This morning i microwaved it for a few seconds to get it luke warm (i figured the cold may hurt is bad gums?) and fed him the whole meal at once and NO THROW UP! It had a few chunks in it as well, and he still did fine he let out 2 ENORMOUS burps after but still good. I still think he may need a new food, bc of the itching around face and stuff, but im gonna keep him on the royal canin for at least a month or 2 just in case, since the vet said it can take that long to see results when an allergy is removed. After that, if he still throws up or sounds sticky on Royal Canin, ill probably switch to something with no corn to see if that could be it, as its the ONLY thing thats not in the Euk canned he was on that he had no problems with. At this point it could be any allergy b/c i think he just has a lot of snot or nasal drip that makes it hard to eat hard food for some reason, and the wet/mashed food could just be working bc its easier to get it passed the snottyness. at least i know what works and is quicker!! BUT I wish i knew what the allergy was so my baby could never have to be around it again!
