| Teddy Bumpkins - Help with Anus issue I was out of town for a few days and left my dogs in the care of a petsitter who obviously did not do her job. Please refrain from comments regarding the petsitter as she has already been dealt with accordingly. I need some help with Teddy, not with how to deal with the petsitter. Apparently while we were gone, Teddy got a poop ball stuck to his bum. To make a long story short, the petsitter brought him to the vet who said no feces were impacted in his rectum and sent Teddy home with an antibiotic called "Albon Oral Suspension." I have not started him on this because I wanted to assess the situation myself. When I arrived home last night, I had to spend a good 2 hours to soak the cement feces off his anus and wash him. It was a pain staking process but I got him clean and when I did, the tissues around his anus were swollen and red. I put some triple antibiotic ointment on him and we went to bed. He seemed to make a little noise of discomfort when he pooped last night but he seemed ok. This morning, the area does not look much improved. He did his morning poop and now it looks "oozey" but I'm not sure if it is the ointment or the anus. He is playing and otherwise acting normally but I'm sure he's not the most comfortable he's ever been in his life. Does anyone have any idea how to treat swollen anus tissues? I read something on google about cool witch hazel but I'm not sure if I should try this. Anything over the counter at CVS or even Petco/Petsmart that I can try to make him more comfortable? I do have a photo of the area but really don't want to post it for all of YT to see but will PM if someone thinks they can help. Thanks. Cathy

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | awww poor Teddy...sounds like you did everything I would have. If his poop was ok Id just keep putting the ointment on and watch him close. And if Im not mistaken I think the albon is for when they have the runs. Hope Teddy gets better fast. |

| Cathie , My daugthers Fiance is a groomer, he said the witch hazel would be very cooling and reduce the swelling... apply with a cotton ball and hold in on for as long as he will tolerate it, you can repeat several times aday edited to add , saturated cotton ball!

| I used Preparation H quite a few times. Makes them more comfortable when they poop and lasts longer and protects better than Triple AB. The ointment stays put longer than the creme formula. He may produce a bit of diarrhea as can happen when they get blocked. Albon is normally prescribed in the treatment of sulfadimethoxine-sensitive bacterial infections in dogs and bacterial enteritis associated with coccidiosis in dogs. Hope your pup feels better soon...

| Update Ok I'm doing the witch hazel on the cotton ball and it seems to be keeping the area clean. He seems to be bothered when I go near his inflamed bum but he's letting me get in there to keep the soaks. He went poop a little while ago and it was very mushy and wet so I went ahead and started the albon. My husband is going to pick up the preparation H ointment so we'll try that too. Other than his backyard issues, Teddy has his spring in his step and is otherwise acting normally. Thanks and if anyone else has any more suggestions, please let me know!

| This has happened a couple of times to Katie. I think it occurs if she has a hard time "going." I just keep her extra clean and this condition remedies itself in a couple of days.

| You stated that the petsitter took him to the vet where he prescribed Albon suspension. Did the Vet give her/him any paperwork explaining the tests that were done; and specifically what type of infection your pup has? I personally would do what the vet has instructed. Albon suspension is used specifically for bacterial infections, as the drug remains unchanged when excreted by dogs; that way treating the entire GI tract. If your vet has given your pup this as a med, then he has found a bacterial infection which needs to be treated. While the other suggestions might aid in the comfort of the dog's outside areas, you should also consider that if he does not take the antibiotics, then the inside infection could possible get worse. |

| Yes I decided to go ahead and start the albon. Thanks for the info on the med. I'm not sure the vey found anything or if they decided to treat him just in case. It did not seem that they figured anything out but I wasn't there so can't be sure. There apparently was more time spent lecturing the petsitter on how the owner, meaning me, should shave his hair off his butt. In 10 years of owning yorkies no one has had butt trims and I'm not about to start now. And, they were about to shave his hair off when thankfully the only brain in the place, a vet tech, suggested this shouldn't be done without the owner there. Are you kidding me!?? Not one of them could figure out to WASH Teddy bumpkins!! I dropped the Petsitter and the vet is going too. They all did not handle it correctly in my view. Poor Teddy!

| I am sorry that you are having to go through this. I know what its like to leave town and then find your babies not in the condition you left them. I don't have any advice - just wanted to let you know that we are hoping Teddy gets better soon. Keep us updated.

| Update Well I did the witch hazel on the cotton ball. Teddy did not really like that too much but he did allow me to do it. I've been doing it to clean him up after he poops. Last night I gave him some cooked sweet potatoes to add some fiber in and I am happy to report that his stool was normal. He did strain some to go but he was fine right after. I put some ointment on his bum. we are only on day 2 of the albion but things seem to be improving. Thanks to all who responded, it really helped me to keep my focus on Teddy's health rather than perseverate on the petsitter's incompetence. Now Teddy, Barney and I can go back to finishing our shopping for the GE for our Secret Buddies!

| My Jasper had the exact same issue last week. He actually was "clogged" and the vet ended up doing an enema on him. But he was very swollen afterward, if you can imagine, and per the vet's advice I put vaseline on him. It stayed red for about a day and a half, and was a little oozey from the vaseline and the enema, so I'm sure you little guy is experiencing the same thing. I would recommend just keeping it clean and the triple ointment, and I'll bet you'll be seeing a difference by tonight and no later than in the morning! Hope he feels better soon!

| Glad to hear that Teddy is doing better. No one can take care of our pups like us. I have a good friend take care of the pups when we go out of town for a day or two and their beards are like concrete from not being washed/wiped after they eat but how much can realistically we ask a "pet sitter" to do when watching the "kids".

| So glad to hear Teddy Bumpkins is feeling better! I also add 5-6 green beans (chopped) to my Peek A Boo's food, helps him to have smoother poops, he doesn't appear to strain as much.
