Blood in stools - Feeding Raw My 9 lb male had blood in his stools late last night. There is no vomiting and he seems to feel fine. It was more than just a small smear, but not gushing. He has a very sensitive stomach, in fact, I have had to take him to the Emergency vet in the past when he ate a small leaf because the stem on it irritated his intestines and caused a bloody stool. They did xrays, gave him antibiotics and $300 and a couple of hours later he was fine! He hasn't eaten any leaves this time and I can only suppose it may be a bone in the raw (Nature's Variety) that I am feeding him that has irritated or scratched his little intestines. He is acting normal, still wants to eat, drink and play with his sister....Does anyone have an opinion or advice on whether he needs to be on an antibiotic if he does have an irritated intestine? Of course, if his next stool has blood, I will take him immediately to the the vet, but if his next stool is normal with no blood, do I still need to take him in? Please help, I'm not too sure what to do this morning. Thanks!

did you feed the chicken? If so that one has large bones in it. If he has another bloody stool i would take him in to have fecal done as you may have gotten tainted meat as well which can happen with raw. If your dog is acting fine no lethargy, no vomitting, etc then not HGE as they act very sick with that and that would be my biggest concern as they can get that from ecoli or salmonella Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE) i am not against raw but some dogs cannot handle it and if you are worried about bones my friend feeds this but she feels out the bones and takes them out

Thanks for your reply! I feed the rabbit. His nutritionist says that it is a "cleaner" meat. I, too, try to take out the larger bones...it's a mess, but I have a smaller baby that eats a small amount and I have to take out all of the fragments for her baby teeth. My daughter is visiting with her 2 yorkies, so all 4 ate the same thing - no problems, so I don't think the food was bad. I just don't know if he needs to be on antibiotics regardless. I have been waiting all morning for him to go to the bathroom...I'll definitely take him if there is any blood, just not sure if there is a need for antibiotics if there is no blood. These babies keep us on our toes, don't they! I worry to death about them!!!

Thanks. I'm going to watch him and decide here in the next hour or so. I just wish he would have another stool so I could see if the blood cleared up. If not, looks like we will be going to the vet!

| One bowel movement with a small amount of red (not black) blood and no other symptoms does not mean a trip to the vet is needed immediately. I would also wait to see the next one. Always make sure gums are pink though... There are reports of bones causing this. Generally it is probably the bones that people give that are on the "no" list (like recreational bones for larger dogs or whatever), but really anything sharp going in could cause a problem. I have even heard of dogs needing enemas and being in pain because of bone consumption.

He is acting perfectly normal. He still has not gone to the bathroom this morning, which I guess could be a good sign..if there were bleeding or other problem I would think he would have diarrhea. He wants to chew his bully stick and run and plays with his sister. I have held off feeding him, but he is acting hungry, so I am going to feed him a small amount and see how he tolerates that. Thank you all so much for your input, sometimes you just feel so lost when it happens to your little one!
