| My pup has diarrhea and I'm not sure how to handle it! I'm a relatively new owner of a yorkie, Isla (she is six months old). I'm really anxious since Isla began having diarrhea a few days ago and yesterday I noticed some blood on the carpet and her stool is watery/ orangish in color. We initially thought that she started her first heat and diarrhea was a side effect of the hormones- but we have not seen blood since then. She threw up once but then started playing right away, like nothing happened. She is acting normal otherwise. we gave her rice and a mix of chicken broth and water last night. Does anybody have any advice? Thank you! |

| I would call the vet. blood in the stool can be something more serious. It could be that her colon is irritated from having diarrhea but it also could be something else. When a dog has diarrhea especially if they are throwing up along with it, they can become dehydrated and it can be very serious. So I would advice calling your vet and asking him what he thinks. good luck and I will pray for your lil one.

| There are many conditions that could cause diarrhea. I am sure people will give you lots of remedies for diarrhea, but one thing I want to say is that you really should get her in to a vet tomorrow. Take a stool specimen with! This is as long as she seems ok today...if she has increased diarrhea and seems sluggish, I would recommend a vet today...probably would have to be an emergency clinic. Make sure she is drinking water and not getting dehydrated! Good luck!

Agree with you 100%. However, I will stress, based that this pup has begun the episodes of diarreah a few days ago and it's watery, blood tinged diarreah...not sure if it should wait. So, many things could be causing her problem, it could be as simple as stress or it coud be a multitude of other reasons. The rice and chicken broth is good but, if the broth is from a can (a bit too much sodium). Might want to boil, skinless, bonless chicken breast instead.

| Thank you everybody! Last night I called the emergency vet and he told me that he would suspect parvo if she werent acting so normal with food/water/ activity. Overnight she had a small case of diarrhea but nothing since around 2 this morning. She ate this morning (rice), and is still drinking the broth mixture/ regular water (I bought organic, low sodium boxed broth and dilute it). I'm watching her closely and trying to learn as much as possible online but it is also making me anxious reading all the sad stories of sick yorkies! I plan on being at the vet as soon as they open tomorrow unless she gets worse, in which case I'll take her in asap. |

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Please let us know how she is! Oh...and don't read TOO much....there is a lot of great information on YT, but I hate to see people get too overwhelmed. It is good to educate yourself....just dont let your imagination run wild. Hopefully, this is a simple thing that can be fixed easily.

| have you fed anything differently recently? If not i would take a stool in tomorrow for a fecal with a lab due to being a pup it can be a number of things and since it has happened for a few days and blood in it I would want it checked keep in mind diarrhea is much more dehydrating than vomitting It is good she is acting normal though but I still would have stool checked tomorrow here is some info - it could be no big deal but due to age there are some things I would want to rule out Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment of Diarrhea in Dogs |

| get a sample yourself though as if you do not take one in they will use something to get it and more stressful on the dog ;( if you get it before vets office is open put it in the fridge to preserve it - you can get a sterile bottle from the drug store just ask the pharmacist or go to er and ask them for a sterile stool sample bottle as they have scoopers on them to scoop it up and put in bottle - the more recent the better when doing test. |

| Isla is going to be ok! Last night Isla took a turn for the worse. She was up every two hours and since she sleeps on a bench at the foot of my bed, she would jump on our bed, yip, then jump off darting towards our bathroom. Poor thing probably knew she wouldnt make it outside and went towards a tile floor. Every two hours we went through this and her diarrhea got worse. She stopped drinking water during the night but maybe thats not abnormal since she wouldnt typically drink at night anyway. We went to the vet first thing and they said she seemed ok but it was likely a parasite. They are doing fecal testing today and we should know by tomorrow. The vet said that her food could be causing it too and gave me suggestions on what may work better. Isla was prescribed medications and the vet also gave us canned bland food with vitamins that will settle her stomach better than rice and chicken. So, the vet told me that Isla will be just fine and I am staying home with her today to make sure she drinks water. Thanks for all your help everybody! |

| Isla's test came back and there were not any parasites. That was good to find out and the vet said it may have been a variety of things, food, something outside that we didnt notice, or even just stress (despite that nothing is new in our routine) She was prescribed metronidazole and she was given a low residue food by Iams. I was feeding her Purina Beneful but after reading a lot, found out that was pretty terrible. We switched her to Nutro Puppy food with Superfoods which she is loves. Thanks again to everybody who gave me advice! |
