I have never heard of a dog dying from the hand dryers but i have heard of them dying from the cage ones and also have heard of them drowning from leaving them in water on a strap. I do not ever leave mine unattended i actually help my groomer groom them as i have a mobile come to home and i hold them while doing nails etc.
A lady on my yorkie group is a groomer and our previous groomer both have told me there is no training for grooming really and our one groomer was trained while in correctional facility. She was great but they train them for a trade and this is one of them while at the youth authorities. A few groomers told me alot of them are drug addicts, etc and come to work drunk or on drugs so the one on my yorkie group has to fire alot of them as not safe. One of my friends poodles died at groomer and i met the dog washer from that grooming shop and she told me he would abuse the dogs while grooming by hitting them if they did not stay still, etc and my friends dog died there

I know there are some wonderful ones as i have a great one and have had a few others but just like all professions there are some bad ones and our dogs cannot talk. Just be careful. I was pretty shocked

I looked into buying a local grooming shop that was up for sale and adding a boutique and selling food there and did a lot of research on it and decided against it as many told me there are alot of flakey groomers and since i did not want to groom I would be relying on these people for my business as i wanted to run the boutique. This is when i found out even more about things
Thanks for your opinion about the dryer. What a tragedy for your friend's poodle. It makes me sick.

This is similar to the one she uses. The one she uses is bigger and is black. Could this potentially cause a burn?!
i do not believe so and many show dog owners use these type of dryers

another thing to be careful of is if you have your dogs belly shaved as the groomer needs to use cooling gel or switch blades as my boy has been burned before by vet as well as a groomer in shaving his belly - i was furious as it is like a hot iron on the stomach my previous groomer who moved an hour away and opened her own shop told me and she was furious when i brought my boy in asking what happened to him after seeing another groomer while she was on vacation. She explained it so when i saw vet did it when dex had ultrasound i said something and she was embarrassed and i am sure let the tech have it. They get lazy and just keep using the hot blade rather than using the cooling gel or switching blades as they are in a hurry as the more dogs they groom the more money they make ;(

again i know there are good ones out there as i have used them but just want you to be aware of some things

there is a video on ebay that shows you how to groom your own dogs as well if you want to learn - she is a member here too

i walked in his shop and it was creepy. I had an eery feeling about it so when she told me about her poodle i was not surprised ;( then i met the dog washer who is now a groomer and we were talking about my friends dog and she told me she worked there as a dog washer when she was in high school and how he treated the dogs - i was so sad my friend cannot even talk about it or she cries and it has been a few years now.

Default Dryer...and Chloe...

Hello everyone - thank you so much for your input and prayers and compassion, I was overwhelmed this morn when seeing all the loving dog owners posting for Chloe.

I spoke to Chloe's mom this morn...and told her about the forum and all your blessings and compassion and she cried (I have known her for 7 yrs and have never seen her shed a tear until this week...and it's been daily)

I will try and find out the dryer info. However, from what I remember Fri (it was all kind of a blur with Mom and the groomer so emotionally upset)...the dryer looked like this AND was attached to a regular small size dog kennel, blowing right in at face/chest level.

http://www.speedydryer.com/00000006_large.jpg

I agree something has to be done and also thought about the mfg and contacting my state's atty general, state legislatures, etc. There is no regulation (at least not here in FL that I know of) or oversight. Not that it would have prevented what happened to Chloe....but it's a start. I'm too tired and emotionally involved to do any of that right now....just want to help get Chloe and Mom thru this right now. But will try to get dryer details and maybe we can unite to bring an end to this for many other dogs that will die from these "accidents", negligence.

Default Chloe...

Hello everyone, I tried to post a bit ago, but got a message it had to be approved by admin first? I included a link to a similar dryer from what I remember Fri - will try to get all details on dryer. It was a silver metal dryer connected to a small size dog kennel, blowing right in, and depending on dog, ears to chest level. I'll try to include pic of similar dryer.

I want to thank everyone for your support, compassion and information. Yes, something has to be done to prevent this from happening - as well, think it needs to start with state regulations and making sure the MFG produces dryers that cannot be set on HIGH.

Later I plan to contact my State Atty General and state legislatures, but that's further down the road....have to get Chloe and mom healed.

Again, everyone...Thank You, Thank You! I talked to Chloe's mom this morn and Chloe is a bit listless, but eating babyfood and soft canned food out of Mom's hand. She will not drink water, but seems to like the crushed ice.

Chloe is 1 year old today!

My heart breaks for sweet little Chloe, I can't bear to think of what she is going through!

You are a wonderful friend to her Mom, please give her Mom a hug from me and a gentle kiss for Chloe. I hope she has the best birthday possible under the circumstances.

Happy Birthday Chloe!

My prayers will be with this baby, I pray she recovers well.

PS Your three babies are adorable! Thanks for sharing their pic.

horrible! In the hospital we rely heavily on silvadine (silver sulfa cream) for bad burns but I am dealing with humans. Keeping her hydrated is very important since fluid and electrolytes are lost thru open wounds, maybe a little chicken broth added to her water. If she seems listless make sure you have some nutra cal on hand to give her added calories or try to see if she will drink Pedialyte plain.
If it were my dog I'd report her to the ASPCA.

Sorry, I guess I didn't answer the question. Sometimes if there is dead skin there from the burn it needs to be removed so that new skin can grow there. I hope everything turns out well for this little one. Please keep us posted as we are a very concerned group.

Pat thanks for keeping us updated on how little Chloe is doing.

I'd like to suggest freezing the baby food in ice cube trays maybe she will take to the frozen food cubes to lick on and get the added nourishment. Could even dilute what she was use to eating in kibbles and freeze it in the ice cube trays.

I am so sad this happened to Chloe, total negligence, it is down right disgusting, praying that she is feeling relief from what ever the vet is giving her for the pain.

Oh my gosh, the pain of a severe burn is horrible and it sure takes a long time to heal. Like margaritaville (Joan) said the Silver Sulpha is awesome. Sounds like the Vet is using something simialar.

The groomers have to be licensed as all stores do. I would turn the pictures over to the state board on licensing groomers and stores, hopefully that these dryers can be outlawed.

Prayers for Little Chole, and her Vet in the surgery Tuesday and in his treating little Chloe to be all well soon, also for these dryers to be outlawed EVERYWHERE.

Hugs, Patti and Jack and girls.

Oh my Gosh that poor poor baby. That pic made me sick. my heart breaks for that poor dog and the owner.
If this is happening at the groomers there needs to be a law for them to stop useing the dryers. was this baby under the dryer to long and not being watched? how sad. Keeping this baby in my prayers.

My heart goes out to your friend and I don't think you'll ever know how much your friendship means to her. I will keep she and her little girl in prayer.

I'm sorry this is so long but there is another thing that can cause our animals burns and I've decided to share this so others can keep this in mind. Heating pad burns. My girl DeeDee was expecting a singleton (x-ray confirmed) and went into labor on the weekend. After the bubble wouldn't come out any more we rushed to the emergency vet. It took a couple more hours before this vet decided she needed to do a c-section because my unborn puppy was not a "live" animal and she had others to take care of. So, once they went into surgery I was fully expecting a dead puppy. I was so sad for DeeDee because she'd had a very strong false pregnancy and wanted a baby so bad. After about a half hour the tech brought the puppy to me to see if I wanted to work on her and within an hour or her birth the miracle name Arabella started to breath. God's gift because DeeDee needed her so bad.
I had c-sections on girls in the past and there were some things that didn't seem right about Dee. When I would touch her the skin would ripple like a wave reacting to my touch. She crouched and didn't want to eat or drink. I would hand feed her and hold the water bowl for her. Bella was the only thing she would pay attention to. By the second day I took her to the vet and that's when I noticed a wet spot through her hair. They checked her out then took her to the back to shave the hair so they could get a closer look. I was told as the clippers tried to cut the hair her skin was just peeling off so they stopped. They had seen this before with a heating pad burn. They said it was going to take a lot of work and months of treatment but keeping the antibiotics in her and her away from the other dogs so no bacteria was around was very important. That vet was part of the group that owned the emergency vet hosp and he didn't think they were going to help me with any expenses. So I went to a vet not part of the group and I'll be darn if that vet didn't call the emergency vet to tell them what I said. When I went for a recheck the file was open and I saw the Dr. wanted them to call with anything I said or did. They all closed ranks and protected the butts of any of the other Dr. When I realized what was happening I called the emg Dr. directly. All I wanted was some help with the long term care and he kept saying no you aren't getting anything from us and if you sue you won't get anything because we are an LLC and don't own anything. So I was alone in my care of DeeDee. It took probably 6 months before it had healed from the inside out. Some of the places never grew hair back but with the other spots that did have hair you could cover most of the scars. I put her pictures in an album on my page. DeeDee was under anesthesia so she couldn't get away from the heat either. Please be careful with heating pads also.
