Default Does anyone know about a collapsed larynx

Hello everyone I am new to the site. I have 4 little yorkie females and 2 tiny male studs. I have a little 2 1/2 lb female that I have been having a problem with. About 3 weeks ago she started having this strange cough and acting like she was gagging. I took her to the vet and we thought she might have kennel cough. He gave her a shot. It did absolutely nothing for her. He had given her some cough medicine so I continued to try that. The following week I called the vet and took her back in. We decided that since none of the other dogs had gotten it that it wasn't kennel cough. He gave her another shot of something else that he said would stay in her system and work for seven days and some kind of cough pills. By the next day I was calling him back and telling him nothing had happened. Actually it seemed worse. He told me he would perscribe an antibiotic and to give it to her for seven days. That time is almost up and she still doesn't seem much better. The part I forgot to tell you is that a day prior to all this happening, Gabbie had gotten her collar stuck in her mouth and probably stayed like that for several hours before I found her. She probably had been fighting it and sucking in air. I mentioned it to the vet and he said it could be a collapsed larynx but that he would treat her with the same procedure anyway. She is eating good and acts very healthy and of course when I bring her to the vet she never coughs. Has anyone had this experience before? Any help would be appreciated. Here are two of my little ones. Roscoe is the first picture and Gabby is the second one.

Is it perhaps a collapsed trachea? I'm sure there are several threads on here about that. I have no first hand experience. Good luck with your baby!

That's what I thought it sounded like - your poor baby - I hope it isn't ! They're both adorable and I hope your vet can help her with her coughing...IF you search collapsed trachea on the web and here you'll find lots of information on this condition...GOOD LUCK !

Omg my baby has that too

I took my little Huey to the vet last Friday to get a shot and after he started to walk around like he couldn't breathe. I was concerned and the vet said that it is very common in little dogs, esp. Yorkies. He said the their trechia is c shaped instead of a circle. He said that they panic when they cannot get enough air in and make those noises. He said usually they can calm themselves down enough to breathe normally, but sometimes they cannot, and they have to surgery to have something put in to keep it open. Sometimes my Huey will do that after drinking. The vet said to pick him up and stroke his fur until he settles down, because he is scared. I hope this helps.

Yes...collapsed trachea is rather common and I know there is a new divice being made now to make the surgery for this condtion easy and have better results. There is info on the internet about it.

Default Thanks for the info

Thanks everyone for helping me with Gabbie. My vet said collapsed larynx but he probably meant trachea. Anyway, after reading what everyone had to say about kennel cough, I really think that is what she has. It is a mystery why none of the other dogs have it but maybe their vaccinations were better than hers. I let my husband read what others said about kennel cough and he agreed with me. We both feel a lot better after hearing everyone elses stories. Thanks again. This is a picture of one of the little girl puppies I just sold. She was 15 weeks.

Kennel cough would most likely occur ANYTIME. Dog can be sitting or playing or anything. Collapesd trachea usually when excited and jumping around or also if something startles the pup. kennel cough sounds like a cat with a hairball stuck in it's throat and collapsing trachea sounds like a cough and sneeze mixed together. The noise you hear if the collapsing trachea is them trying to blow it back open. To definately diagnose a collapsing trachea, a vet would have to have the dog right in the process of an xray, and the dog would have to have an attack at the very moment of the xrays for them to see it, otherwise the throat usually looks normal. My vet told me he has only actually caught it in the act 3 times in his whole practcing years and only because it was so advanced. He told me many very small dogs can deal with it and blow it back out them selves for quite a many years.
So anyway... hope this helped you. ... Also kennel cough can last for weks , so if it has only been a week it is quite possible coughing can still be going on. The important thing is to keep seperated and continue meds for the whole time. I have NEVER heard of the answer to kennel cough being a shot for borditella after the dog already has it. That's kind of like geting a flu shot after you have the flu.... too late!

With collapsing trachea when the dog gets excited and starts to make that weird sneezy coughing sound take the palm of your hand and butt it gently but firmly against his nose.If you hold it for a minute or two breathing will slow as the dog has to mouth breathe. This worked for us with Pete our second yorkie. The collapsing trachea is common in yorkies and poms.

Default My Yorkie has a bad cough

My little Yorkie is coughing, like she is trying to cough something up. She is doing it many times a day and I am so concerned. We just had her teeth cleaned about a month ago and then she got pancreatis and now she is coughing this terrible cough. I never thought about it being kennel cough, could that be what it is? Some more advise. Is this what kennel cough sounds like?

Sad collapsed tracea

I have an adorable little Yorkie that had a collapsed tracea. It was sooo sad. on a scale of 1-4 (4 being the worst) she was a definite 4! Anyway, thank goodness I took her to the university and had a good vet.... they did surgery that was extremely expensive.... but, worth it as it appears that she is going to be o.k. She more than likey would have died of affixiation soon.... so, all you yorkie owners out there... remember, if they are making a "honking" noise when they get at all excited and it calms down after THEY calm down, then it is more than likely a collapsed or collapsing trachea. I have some adorable pics of my little yorkies but can't seem to figure out how to get them on here... anyone have the guidelines for me... it keeps saying they are too big a file

Since her collar got stuck in her mouth, she may have damaged her trachea. Your vet needs to take xrays. Most times they can be managed with medications, but if it is severely damaged she might need surgery.

Collapsed Trachea ~ Pawprints and Purrs, Inc.

I'm sure you learned this from your experience, but Yorkies and other toy bred dogs should never ever wear a collar. Their tracheas are too fragile.

My Yorkie recently had lab work done and the vet said she had a collapsed larnyx otherwise he said she is perfectly healthy, maybe a little overweight. She sounds like she has pneumonia. Since her testing in August she has gotten much worse to the point of, it hurts to see her breathe like this. When she gets excited she acts like she is having an asthma attack, if I rub her neck and talk to her she settles down. There are times she breathes normal, usually when she is really relaxed or in a deep sleep. The sad part is I have no income to help her, so you cry alot knowing things aren't getting any better. I just don't know how far to let her go before taking her out of her pain. I have been trying to find online what specific symptoms to look for to see if she is suffering, does anyone know?
