Kennel cough would most likely occur ANYTIME. Dog can be sitting or playing or anything. Collapesd trachea usually when excited and jumping around or also if something startles the pup. kennel cough sounds like a cat with a hairball stuck in it's throat and collapsing trachea sounds like a cough and sneeze mixed together. The noise you hear if the collapsing trachea is them trying to blow it back open. To definately diagnose a collapsing trachea, a vet would have to have the dog right in the process of an xray, and the dog would have to have an attack at the very moment of the xrays for them to see it, otherwise the throat usually looks normal. My vet told me he has only actually caught it in the act 3 times in his whole practcing years and only because it was so advanced. He told me many very small dogs can deal with it and blow it back out them selves for quite a many years.
So anyway... hope this helped you. ... Also kennel cough can last for weks , so if it has only been a week it is quite possible coughing can still be going on. The important thing is to keep seperated and continue meds for the whole time. I have NEVER heard of the answer to kennel cough being a shot for borditella after the dog already has it. That's kind of like geting a flu shot after you have the flu.... too late!
