Hello All

Our 2 year old yorkie female had 4 puppies about 3 weeks ago. We found out today that one of them has CH. The vet said we should have him euthanize but we recently had to do that to a dog that has been in our family for 14 years, so we just can't bring ourselves to do it. Nor do we really want to. He is so adorable and we have heard stories of dogs that lead practically normal lives with CH. That said some opinions from others would be greatly appreciated.

I would want to make sure of the diagnosis. What symptoms is the puppy displaying. Some animals can live a fairly normal life if adjustments are made for his disability. Also there are related conditions that can be mistaken for this so I would want to be sure before the puppy is euthanized

Well he is a bit smaller then his brothers. He also rolls around alot, has a floppy head problem and has mild tremors. Granted he is only 3 weeks old but I don't think he has walked once as of yet. We don't really want to euthanize him. My wife and I would much rather help him live his life the best we can. Even if it will have a moderate amount of monetary cost.

Did the vet do an MRI to determine this? Or what tests did he preform? I have heard of dogs living with CH, below is a link of one who is. From what I understand, if he can feed for himself, then he does have a chance, with help from the family of course. Rolling Dog Ranch might be able to assist you with information. I will also try to find more research for you. Hope this helps.

No.. No MRI was done.. Really no tests either. It was completely from a visual assessment. We are going to help him and see to it that he gets a chance at life. Any information that anyone can provide would be great.

It all depends how severe his symptoms are. At 3 weeks I think it it hard to tell. If he isn't able to walk at all though he won't have much quality of life. I wait a few weeks and assess him again. I'd also want the diagnosis confirmed. I would definately get a second opinion when he's a bit older. We have a dog whoses 3yrs old with a huge hole in his soft palate who the vet said probaby wouldn't make it through puppyhood so you just never know

I think it does depend on how affected he is and you need more time to really evaluate how affected he will be. I have a little 18 month old boy who was the smallest in his litter and I thought he was having trouble latching on because he was just slightly less mature than his brother and sisters. Actually it's one of the symptoms (intention tremors) when they try and focus on something like the food bowl or your face they will get tremors. My little guy doesn't have any motor problems and his tremors haven't gotten any worse. He doesn't shake all the time. He's a very sweet boy but most of the people that have been interested in him have been spooked by the videos on the internet. If he stays with me forever I'm fine with that too. Sending positive thoughts your way.

I am in agreement with most other posters. The only thing you can do is wait and see how he does. I would also consider getting a second opinion once he is a little older. I will continue to do some research for you to see what I can find. Best of luck.

My little girl has CH. She has a mod to severe case. She is so loving but is unable to walk. She also just rolls around. Don't put her/him down They have normal mental status but physically they are more demanding. I love my little girl to death I adopted her for that very reason she was deemed to be euthanized. If you would like to pm me and I can give you my nimber and we could talk more. I did not have an MRI due to costs but it would not change anything It is not fixable. Where are you located?

HI I was just checking to see how your baby is doing? I just took my girl in to be evaluated and fitted for a wheelchair. The vet made some calls to see if she would be a good canidate and apparently there are may dogs out there with this condition that are living and have a wonderful quality of life. I did get an estimate for a chair and it will run $500.00 plus so I have to wait a bit before I actually can purchase it so in the meanwhile I looked on line and got some plans to make one.
