| Pancreatitis-What to feed him? Questions . . . Hi-My first time here and i appreciate any advice. Pfender, 2 years, 11 mos.'s spCL test came back this morning at 663 lipase level, which the vet says is consistent with pancreatitis. He had been vomiting for a a few days before we brought him in. Prior to that he had been eating Stella & Chewy's frozen chicken patties which he enjoyed. But this weekend we gave him a beef bone which he ate up. He started feeling bad later that day and the vomiting after eating started the day after. He is now on an antibiotic and an antacid and we have fed him rice boiled in chicken broth with either bits of chicken breast or steamed carrots (which is really his favorite food). He hasn't vomited since he started on the rice/chicken meals and is much more energetic/less sick looking. The vet says that he will need a low fat/low carb diet. He gave us some cans of RD in the meantime but apparently folks here say that is not good. I have read a few of the threads here about Yorkies with the condition and was curious about feeding going forward. What have you used? I would prefer to find an already prepared food from a pet or feed store. I have seen Purina HA mentioned. How have the results been with that? Are there other foods people have used that have effectively curbed attacks? Are there specific foods/ingredients should be avoided to help prevent future attacks besides the obvious pork, beef, higher fat stuff? What about treats-any specifics? Is there any other advice regarding the condition and things to help a Yorkie that you can offer. IT would be appreciated. I just want to make sure he is getting the right things. Thanks for any advice! |

YT 3000 Club Member | My girlfriends dog has this and she has done well on solid golds holisitique blend dog food it is 6% fat, which is good for a good dog food. Buddy biscuits treats are pretty low in fat 4 or 5% I think. There are some canned dog food that is low as well, I want to say it is halo it is 1.5%. |

| Layla has pancreatitis. I would stay away from the Purina food- RD isn't great but I know some dogs are so sick with pancreatitis that it is all they can stomach. Low carb is not what you are looking for- just low fat. As someone else said the Solid Gold holisitic is 6% which is a good fat level. I home cook for LAyla- but that isn't for everyone. She is also on a lipase supplement which just helps her pancreas in that it doens't have to make the lipase. Treats need to be fruit or veggie based which can be hard. I make Layla's treats= it is pumpkin based and she loves it. |

| Do you want a prescription food or something that you can get at the pet store? Depending on how well he does, an rx diet may be important. Purina HA can be used, but it will probably run about $3 a pound. Yes, some people here would, "Never feed Science Diet," but unfortunately one day the sad reality may hit...there is no choice, especially if homecooking isn't an option. I know I hated the though of feeding rx food too, but one day I was backed into a corner and needed to try it. In our case it didn't work, but it does for some. There are lots of foods that can be used for mild pancreatitis issues. What % of fat does your vet want you to stay below? Do they want you giving medium chain triglycerides or will any fat source do?

| My Presley suffers from this. Has for about 7/8 years. We have him on Iams Low Residue dog food. My vet said its easier for him to digest. He would still have vomiting spells every now and them 1 or 2 times a year, but ever since we decided to feed him the canned version he has been doing very well on it. No episodes *fingers crossed* for 2 years now. He still gets the hard version...but we think the soft version is better for him. His stools are not soft (we worried about that). You can only get it at the vets office. Its not cheap, but its worth it. About $15 for a 5lb bag and $35 for a case of the canned. I'll never forget the first time I came home from work and opened up the laundry room and blood was everywhere from him vomiting. Never been so scared in my life. We used to feed him some table scraps.. No more. Lesson learned. |

| Hi and thanks for the responses. Pfender is on an antibiotic (Bayril)(?) and an antacid (Famotidine(?)) and goes back for a follow-up blood test on 10/30. We have kept him on variations of a chicken broth boiled rice, chicken and veggie (carrots or broccoli) diet since Tuesday and he hasn't vomited since. His spirtis seem up again but we are watching him closely. In the meantime we have been researching pancreatis and proper foods for him. So far, we have looked at Lotus, Great Life Natural, Holistic Select, Solid Gold, Wellness Weight Managment, Innova, and Whole Earth, Honest Kitchen. We don't want to continue with Stella & Chewy's Raw because he got sick about a month after he started on it and I can't get it out of my head that maybe it had something to do with it. Probably doesn't but that is what he kept vomiting on. And I think it is a little higher in fat/protein than the vet says. We would appreciate any feedback on any of the above brands! Also, I see a lot of foods have flax seed -either oil or ground- but have seen some opinions on YT that this is bad? Is this true? Also, what about foods that contain salmon oil or salmon? I know these are "good fats" for a human but are they for a Yorkie? Ellie May- the vet said to try to find food at about 12% fat/25% protein. He agreed with our local Centinela Feed that looking at "Senior Dog" foods is OK since it just means lower fat/lower protein. I dod not know about the triglyceride issue-I will ask the vet. Marcerella-Good to know that we don't have to go "low carbohydrate" - I don't know what we would have done in that case. I am looking for veggie treats. I guess his old favorites like Bully sticks, pigs' ears, rawhide, etc. are out because of the high fat content? Also, he loves steamed carrots but now I have read that it is best to give lower glycemic index vegetables-is this true? It is all very confusing about what is good and not good for them. Also, I learned that the high lipase count means that the pancreas are secreting lipase and for that reason that they have to work harder. And, that giving the supplement helps the pancreas to not have to work as hard? Is that the theory in giving the pup the supplement? (At first I thought it would HURT him becasue he is already high in lipase). What supplement should we look for? chestermama-Thanks for the tip on Buddy biscuits. We will try those. One last thing-This York doesn't drink! He drank some gatorade and water when he was vomiting but since then he has drank very little. (He never really has drank much water in my opinion) We put about 2 tbls. of chix broth in his meals to make sure he is getting some fluids but I am concerned he needs more and would prefer he drink water. Is there a way to get a dog to drink water? I would appreciate any tips . . . . Thanks again everyone! |
