| Broken leg or not? I have a 17 1/2 week old yorkie girl. She only weighs 1lb 9ozs. She was supposed to weigh much more when we got her, but when I had her weighed it did not match up with the weigh the breeder had told me. I have read about little yorkies and broken bones. We have been extra carful with her since she came to us but today while we were grilling outside she fell off our back porch. She does not walk on her front leg and whines when I touch it. It is not swollen and my husband thinks it may just be sore. I am not sure. There is not an emergency vet near our home and my vet does not open until 9 tomorrow. I am keeping her comfortable until we can have it looked at. She does not seem to be in pain as long as she doesn't walk on it. Does anyone have experience with broken bones? Any suggestions on what I can do now? HELP! |

| Poor little baby! If you don't live near a vet that can see her till tomorrow, sounds like you are doing all you can. Keep her off of it, resting, make sure to get some food and water down her. You are probably not letting her walk, I would carry her to go potty or whatever. I would be at the vets office when they open in the morning, be there when they unlock the door. Wish I could actually be of help to you, hang in there and please let us know how she does.

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | Unfortunately, I have had a lot of experience with broken yorkie legs. It sounds like a break. If it is, since your baby is so small, if your doctor confirms that it is a break, I strongly recommend that you find a vet that deals with orthopedics. The ortho vet will probably recommend putting pins and a plate in it. Yeah, it costs money but in the end, your baby will heal much quicker. You should read my blog about my Max. He had two broken front legs and went through h*ll. Go to blogs, click on 'find more' under Recent Entries. Go to page 15 and the title is "My Max". If I can be of any help let me know. Cindy

| She really needs to get to a vet. I did a google search and found this emergency animal hospital. Google Maps It really wouldn't be fair to make her wait, if it truly is broken she will be in horrible pain. Please get her in.

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | When Max's leg broke, I did call the vet right away,, it was the evening when it happened. The vet said just make him comfortable and bring him in in the morning. The reason I didn't go to the Emergency Vet was Max was comfortable where he was, he did not show any pain. And I didn't want to stress him out with a new vet at that time. If you do go to the emergency vet, ask if they have had experience with broken legs in tiny dogs. Casting or splinting them won't always work.

| Thanks to everyone who has replied! I do live in the middle of no where on a farm and it would take me an hour and half to get to a vet. It is also the middle of the night here even though the time listed is different. My boys are asleep and my husband has been called out to work. I will be waiting at the vets office tomorrow morning! I am not sure we have a ortho vet here in rural wv but we may need to find one. I don't know if it matters or not but it only seems to hurt at the very bottom of her leg. If I touch the pads she cries. Hopefully if it is a break it is not a really bad one that would require drastic measures! She does seem to be ok for now. She has even been hopping around (even though I try to stop her) and wanting to play. She is sleeping now and I think I will try to also. Thanks for all the wonderful advice and support and I will let everyone know what the vet says! Thanks Ashlee |

| Ashlee, I am just now reading this. I am keeping you and Fiona in my thoughts and prayers today as you go to the vet to get a diagnosis on the problem. I truly pray that all goes well.

| Dogs can endure a great deal of pain so even if she is walking better over the weekend I still would go to the vets. One of my rescue's was picked up on the street, kept in the pound for a week and finally when rescue could get him out and taken to a vet he had been kicked so hard in the back leg it was lifted out of the socket and this dog never let on. To this day when he runs he only runs on 3 legs. The decision was made not to do surgery as it would have shorten his leg and caused even more problems down the road. The vet put him under and then pushed it back into the socket.

| Thanks so much for everyones concern! SO many nice people on here! I took Fiona to the vet this morning and they did an x-ray. Her foot is broken and she will have to wear a splint for 6 weeks. They gave me pain meds for her and she seems to be doing fine. She is hopping around everywhere. If you didn't see the splint you would think nothing is wrong. I am trying to keep her still as much as possible but she is a puppy and loves to play. She will go back in 2 weeks and I will update everyone about how she is doing then. I am not sure this where I need to update but if I find another place on this site I will put the news there too. Still getting used to this wonderful site! Thanks so much for the thought and prayers and I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend! Ashlee |

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | Just a few tips, do not let her splint get wet. If the splint gets wet, she will develop gangarine. So check her splint a couple times a day and if you find that it is damp, take her to the vet right away to get it changed. My max lost two tonails and one pad to gangarine. Keep us posted

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i'm sorry to hear that she has a broken leg. Since she is so young and so small her bones are like butter and healing is hard. you really really really need to keep her confined and not let her play or jump or run around. only walk her when she needs to go potty. its very important that you do this. the bones need to heal. Also if she is active she can develop sores under the cast from the cast rubbing her skin. this can cause an infection which she does not need. i hope the break was a clean one and the cast will fix it. in my opinion, with any type of break, an orthopedic surgeon should be seen so they can determine if the break needs surgery or if a cast will suffice. i've worked with vet surgeons and we had to fix many legs that were casted and didn't work. the dog ends up suffering and being confined way longer then it needs to be because proper methods weren't taken in the beginning.

if you take her outside to potty put two bags over the splint so that it doesn't get wet. if there is ANY moisture in the splint there is a great chance she will develop an infection so it needs to be changed right away. i've seen it happen many many times. if it constantly gets wet and stays wet and infected, then yes she may lose some things but that's not typical.

I couldn't agree more. The best chance of healing is right in the beginning. As time goes on, it gets harder to heal. Too many dogs end up needing an amputation because the window of opportunity for healing was missed. I would definitely ask for a second opinion from an orthopedic vet. Often the xrays can be sent to them for review and you won't even have to bring her in. He will be able to tell if she needs some sort of fixation, i.e, pins, etc. to give her leg the best chance of healing. | |
