| Oh My, Ralphie has to have surgery...on his Wee wee! So I took Ralphster to the vet for his vaccines today. And of course his little, um, "wee wee" was stuck out like it always is . Kind of embarrassing to try and describe this properly. I'm sure you all get the idea I mentioned to the Dr. that this has been happening quite frequently. Sometimes he goes almost the entire day with the tip stuck out. The Dr. said that he will need surgery for this because it can dry up and literally fall off. Then they have to do a very serious procedure to remove the entire thing . I just really CANNOT believe this. I mean, of all the things. I was an absolute nervous wreck when he had his hernia repair/neuter. Now this??? My poor little baby. It is just always something with him. Has anyone ever heard of it being this bad? Oh yeah, and I called my mother when I got home to tell her about it and I could hear her yelling out to my sister with a giggle, "Ralphie has to have pee pee surgery". All my sister said was "gross". They weren't trying to be mean, we just always find a way to laugh at things, no matter how terrible they are .

| Oh poor Ralphie! I've never heard of such a thing to do to a poor lil pup. I thought when they get stuck out like that, you can shove them back in with lube or something. I can't remember but I read something about it on here. Did you get a second opinion? That just sounds like not a fun procedure. I hope he heals up fast and without too much discomfort.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i've seen this surgery performed before on a few dogs. Its not a common surgery so i would make sure you take him to a board certified surgeon to have it done so he can be monitored 24/7 during the time he is there. Are they going to remove the whole thing and "rewire" the plumbing so he pees like a girl?

| Thank you for all the prayers, they are def. needed. I really do trust my vet, he specializes in high risk surgeries and he is very well known in the area. I always try to put lube on it when this happens and sometimes after a few hours it helps, and sometimes not. I do not know all of the specifics on the surgery right now. I do want to research it some more, this is the 1st time I have even heard of something this crazy. So, I will be studying on it and talking more with my vet. He said that he had just preformed one a Chihuahua. My vet said that it is much easier to preform the surgery which he says is not a difficult operation, versus taking the chance that it could dry out too much one day and literally die. He said the surgery to remove the whole thing is very serious with a 2 week hospital stay, ughhh. I will of course get all the information I can on this first but I just can't take that kind of a risk with my little man. He really is my WORLD. I love him more than anything, this whole thing just makes me sick !

| This is often caused by a behavioral problem. Does he lick at it often? You can use KY gel for lubricant. Try putting a cone collar on him so he can't get at it for a week or two. The problem is that they lick it dry so it can't go back in by itself. Or you can get a shock training collar the kind with the peep on it. Don't use the shock setting use the beep setting. You may be able to find one that's just a beep collar with a remote. I haven't found one yet. Any way when he licks at it make the collar beep. He will eventually get that it's not an acceptable behavior and stop licking at it. It worked for my dog. |

| When you lube it are you pulling the skin back up on it , or just lubing? Don't EVER try to PUSH it back in, always pull skin up over it. And if you trim the hair on the tip make sure not to trim too short. It pokes the tip and irritates them , it will cause them to lick at it. Last edited by lillymae; 07-18-2009 at 10:45 PM. |

The 3 Musketeers Donating Member | Poor Ralphie! I was babysitting a dog that had that problem once in awhile. I just put KY gel on it and pulled the skin around it up. It sounds like his wee wee is out a lot so maybe having the surgery is the way to go. Wouldn't want that thing to dry up someday when you aren't around to take care of it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh Ralphie ! Gosh, this sounds scary, but you sound like you have great confidence in your vet, that's very good. Has he done a lot of these surgeries before? It's true, their little manhoods cannot be out for extended periods of time, it can cut off blood supply. I'm so sorry that surgery is needed, I know that thought is very scary. Know that we're here for you, and please keep us updated on dear Ralphie.

| Thank you again for all the support. You really have no idea how much I need it. I really don't have anyone else to talk about it to except my bf and he is just as confused and scared about the whole thing as I am. Yes, the problem is with him licking it. He really "loves" himself too much...like every night. Then I wake up in the morning and it is out and dry and looks sooo painful . So I put lube on it and try to work the hair out. I can never get it to go back in though. He usually starts licking it because of the lube and eventually he gets it to go back in. He has always had this problem but never this frequently. It is becoming a daily ordeal . Part of me just wants to keep a close eye on him always and say no to the surgery for awhile. Then the other part of me thinks that it would be irresponsible of me to take that risk with the love of my life knowing the consequences. It really is bothering me and my bf. He thinks we should do the surgery and not risk it. I think that is what we will end up doing but I need to talk to my Dr. more 1st. He seemed very confident and acted like the procedure was not a big deal. He was more concerned with what could happen if we didn't do the surgery. I do not know how many times he has done it though so I would like to know that. Also, he is not the kind of vet to "push" things on me. I went through a lot of vets with all of Ralphies intestinal issues when he was younger. I finally found this vet and he never takes advantage of the fact that I am obsessive over Ralphie and worry about every little thing . He is always the one to calm me down and not get worried over little things that he knows is no big deal. He repaired both of Ralphie's hernias and did his neuter. So when he seems concerned, it really bothers me. I will keep you guys updated on this. Thanks again for the advice and support, me and the Ralphinator really appreciate it
