Thanks for posting this link. I had never even heard of HGE and it sound very scarry. You'd think, Winstons vet would have run some tests in that direction. Can't imagine why not. Sounds just what the little guy is suffering from and time seems to be running out. Again, thanks for the info on yet another disease new to me! Kathy, I hope Winston is getting better soon. Keep us updated on what the vet said.

HGE is very easily diagnosed it is tied to the red blood cell count - if it is high it is hge as the blood is coagulating in the body thus will shut down the organs in the body as the blood stops moving freely in the body so everything is stopped. The first sign is thick raspberry red poop as the blood is coagulated again. It happens rapidly so dog can die within 48 hrs. It is tied to coming in contact with dead animals and can be caused from eating raw meat so make sure if you feed raw you get quality organic meat from a reliable source to not get this along with salmonella or ecoli

bloody diarhea and blood in vomit can be many things. If vet ran a panel it would be obvious so if vet did not see this then it is not hge- this one is not hard to miss like some others.

Oh how well I know this. Toby was extremely ill and critical when we took him to the hospital. Thank goodness they knew what it was with quick blood work and getting him on an IV!
