| Bloated Stomach and Weight Gain We have a 5 year old spayed female Yorkie. Last Wed we noticed that her stomach was very bloated and hard. We weighed her and she gained about a pound. The vet was not available on Thur so we waited till Friday to get her checked out. After spending $200 on tests the vet had no clue what is wrong. By the time she left the vet her stomach was way down and the vet basically thought we were nuts and she was just getting fat. Today is now Sunday and her stomach is bloated again. Her eating habits have not changed and we have not changed her food in the past couple of months. She seems almost normal except for the big stomach. Her weight over the past couple of days has fluctuated between 7.8 to 8.4. She was playing with the kids today and racing around the yard - normally she wins every time but not today, she seemed a step slow. She still seems to have a good appetite. The vet did say that her liver blood work was off but had no explanation other then we needed to retest in a couple of weeks. Thanks for any help or suggestions, we are worried about here but don't know what to do - we don't want to keep taking a healthy acting dog to the vet if there is nothing wrong or she just has an upset stomach! |

| I don't have no advice on this. I would take her to another vet, there's got to be some thing causing it. My sisters dog got a big bloated tummy but she also acted sick with hers. she lost her baby. but your saying yours is not sick only the bloated tummy. Id still have her checked out by another vet. Good luck and I hope every things ok with her. hope someone comes and sees this and can help you more. |

| A swollen belly is a classic sign of liver disease. Did you get a copy of her bloodwork? Do you know what her ALT was? She definitely needs more testing. Has she ever had a bile acids test? All Yorkies should have them as puppies since liver disease is so prevalent in the breed. Here are some links for you: PSVA and MVD Research Summary Liver Disease |

| Thanks for the info regarding the liver disease (I think). Her ALT number was 257 - the normal range is 10-118. everything else was withing normal limits except for TP which was 3.5 below the 5.4 to 8.2 range. Can liver disease be treated or reversed? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My pom went in to liver failure from the medicine she was on for Cushing's disease. They but her on 2 meds and after about 8 months her liver values were normal. I would definitley get another opinion.

Milk thistle will probably be very good for her after you find out what you are dealing with. I would schedule a bile acids test asap. Here is some information about Milk Thistle: MILK THISTLE | |

| Did you have them check the protein level in the blood work. My girl has lymphangectasia (which is common for the breed) and it all started with the same symptom you described and $3500 later we are dealing with it. |

| We have not checked the protein but I will ask the vet. We did take her to a different vet for a second opinion. She believes it is a gastrointestinal issue. We have been giving her medicine for the past couple of days that have seemed to reduce the swelled stomach (which ballooned to 9.2 pounds - now down to 8.2). She is acting more like her normal self but I am not convinced everything is OK yet. This has been the strangest illness I have ever seen. I will update when we know more! |

| A couple months ago we noticed that our five year old, spayed yorkie, Martini, had a bloated belly and was refusing her food. She was also wheezing and snoring more than usual. It has been discovered that she has a congestive heart. After being on a water pill for less than a week her belly bloat was gone. She had gained half a pound of fluid in less than a week! She is also on a heart pill, enacard. I would probably ask for a chest x-ray or seek a second opinion. Martini is friskier now, too. She has always 'dripped' urine while walking and is on two meds to help control that but now the water pill makes her drink more which also makes her pee more. She doesn't make it to her pee pee pad a lot of the time now either. I'm considering trying the doggie diapers, but I'm afraid she may become confused????? I just know that I am tired of mopping the floors ten or more times a day! |
