| Vomiting and lethargic I woke to Kilo (6 months?) vomiting this am and stupidly fed him before consulting with Dr. Google. He threw that up and now we've taken all food away but have water out for him. He seems quite lethargic but isn't vomiting any more (I'm guessing he has nothing left in his system). We just started feeding him homemade food (cooked ground beef, carrots, egg) and yesterday my 7yo gave him some milk but other than that I can't think of any food changes. Could it be the homemade food or the milk? Could it be garbage gut? Dr. Google says keep him off food for 24 hours and then slowly feed white rice and see how it goes. Does that sound right with everyone here or are our small breeds different? Should we take him to the vet today? He walks around without a problem but doesn't have the spunk he normally does. Is there any danger in waiting until tomorrow am? His tummy doesn't seem to be painful to touch (when we palpate he doesn't yelp). |

| Yes, it is probably the homemade food. How many times did he throw up? Is he holding down water? Are his gums pink?

| Holding down water (as far as I can tell - he isn't drinking much), threw up a LOT (but again, I fed him the meatballs - homemade - this am before consulting Dr. Google) but hasn't thrown up for a good while now (2 hours or more). Gums look pink to me (normal). |

| I just remembered - yesterday he got his Frontline application (4th time?) and I wonder if he managed to get some on his paw and licked it? I had the kids keep guard on him for an hour after the application to make sure he didn't get any on his paw (I know that applying to the neck is supposed to make it impossible for them to get at it, but you never know) but I wonder if he still managed to do that... |

| You need to make sure he eats 4 times daily. If he is not get him to a vet tomorrow. Also when he is better please check out the dog food review in the Yorkie Health & Diet section....This will give you a better understanding on what Yorkies should eat and not eat....Good Luck.... |

Should I be giving him food even though Dr. Google says to "starve" them for 24 hours when they're vomiting? He started the vomiting either very early this am (I noticed at 7am) or sometime after midnight/1am.

| Unfortunately, since he vomiting quite a bit and isn't holding down water after giving something with questionable fat content like beef and egg, I'd be very concerned about pancreatitis right now. Hopefully it is just an upset stomach though. I don't know if there is any time difference between Michigan and your area of Mexico but it looks like he hasn't been able to hold water down for about 18 hours. At this point it is a judgment call on whether to wait until tomorrow or go now. Pink gums are a good sign though. Do you have a vet on call 24/7 that you can call and talk to? You will need to withhold food because he can't even hold down water but that isn't good for a pup either. Do you have Nutrical? Karo syrup? He may be better by morning which would be great but then you won't know what happened and how to avoid it next time. What type of beef did you use? How lean was it? Did you give egg yolk? What fat % was the milk? Does he handle other sources of lactose okay? How long have you been cooking for him? Do you balance the diet with supplements?

| My biggest worry with him would be dehydration. Gently pinch some loose skin on his neck and see if it stays up or pops right back down immediately. If it stays up at all he's probably in need of fluids and should go to the vet ASAP. Have you tried giving him a bowl of ice cubes to lick? That way they get fluids, but slowly...so they're less likely to throw it up. I'd not feed him overnight. Then, if he's not barfing and looks like he's feeling better, try a small amount of rice in the morning. I've also had good luck giving Pepto Bismol -- 2 CC for a 6 lb adult pooch (adjust for your guy's weight). You could try that now...wouldn't hurt.

I'm not sure of the fat content of the meat - probably 80/20? Down here cows are super lean so they add fat to the ground beef. Not sure what Nutrical or karo is, but I can make a sugar-water concoction for him. We also have pedialyte at the farmacia I can get. The egg was cooked into the meat along with everything else - the milk was whole (down here the milk is all ultrapasturized in boxes - no need to refrigerate). he has had cheese before but very rarely and has been ok with that. We just started cooking because he has been itchy and it isn't fleas but the only dog foods we can get are the really poorly rated ones. I was thinking maybe he had a corn reaction. We *just* started the cooking so we haven't taken him completely off the Pedigree (puppy chow) he's been eating - yesterday was his first day on the meatballs. They were 80% meat, 15% oats, rest carrots and an egg - then cooked. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the feeding advice - if he's not holding anything down tomorrow, I'll definitely take him in. He has been sleeping all day and I'm getting pretty worried about him. Right now, #2 son is cuddling with him on the couch in the A/C (where he never is allowed ). Thanks again - you guys have really helped put my mind at ease a bit and also given my things to look for. Oh, and down here, doctors and vets give out cell and home phone numbers as a matter of course - I'll call the vet if he gets worse. The vet is normally open until 8pm (they close from 2pm to 4pm) - if he doesn't keep this water down, I'm thinking I should just take him in? Last edited by kathy_caribe; 05-25-2009 at 02:27 PM.

| Poor guy! That's a lot of change and a lot of fat in one day. I too would be concerned about pancreatitis. If he doesn't keep the water down I would definitely have him checked by the vet. Please keep us updated. |

| Yikes! I had no idea! He has held down water given at 4:50 and 5:20 so maybe he might be on the mend? I am kicking myself now for the meatballs - a very trusted vet friend advised me on them (but she has mexican street dogs (big) and a dobie). If I am the one who did this (I was certain he'd eaten something bad - we don't have doors and he is in and out (since there really is no "in" or "out") all day and can pick stuff up anywhere - but now it looks like *I* did it to him! Oh, I could just kick myself. |
