| We are away on vacation & Buddy keeps yelping!! Something is wrong with Buddy causing him to yelp in pain. We cannot determine exactly where the pain is coming from but it is somewhere on his front legs, chest, neck, etc.... He is NOT limping but all this started yesterday morning when I was loving on him he yelped really loud when I was barely hugging him. As the day went on he started to yelp when no one was around him. I have examined him over and over ....he seems to yelp out when we are in the chest and shoulder area. (but we cannot be certain bc he is so jumpy & nervous as we touch him) His yelping out of the blue is breaking my heart!! We are away on vacation and we are right on the beach ....he cries and barks if I leave him. (not unusual bc he loves the beach) He walked at least 3 miles with me yesterday and did not miss a step. (NEVER yelped once....of course I would of carried him if he acted as if he was hurt) He even was digging in the sand. Once back inside ....he jumps up and down off the sofa constantly but every once in awhile he will yelp. (he is a 10 pounder and has always been a jumper) This morning I took him out to walk and he was happy as could be just bouncing along on the beach then all the sudden he yelped and sat down!! (again, he is not limping) He has done with several times this morning when I have taken him out....yelps and sits. Then the next thing ya know he wants to play!!!! He is eating, drinking and pooping normally. I would take him to a vet if I thought it was an emergency but I do not think this is the case. (plus it is Easter Sunday which I think I would have a hard time finding a vet open) Can I give him anything for pain? If he gets worse I will find a vet hospital but in the mean time I thought maybe I could give him something for pain. Can we give them something for pain? I have never had to do this & wasn't even sure if this was an option. Any suggestions? Happy Easter to all!!!

| Scout did this before and it turned out he had a bulging disk in his back..after 100's of dollars worth of xrays, the vet told us to have him not jump up and down on things for a few weeks (haha) and put him on a 5 day course of prednisone. We also have him a buffered baby aspirin when it seemed to act up. I think the aspirin helped him more than anything.

| You can give aspirin (not sure on the dose) but since it is a blood thinner and not really meant for dogs, it is way better to ask a vet first. I can only say that I would have him to the vet tomorrow morning at the very latest.

| He isn't getting sand fleas from the beach is he? Those things do hurt. Don't know if they stay with a dog though..... |

| I suggest that you go and see a vet before starting any type of meds. Hopefully it will be fine, but I think it would be worth finding out.... dogs don't always show pain in the way humans do. Good Luck to you, and keep us posted!

| Thank you for those that have replied! I cannot be certain but I THINK it might be something to do with having him on a leash for the past several days while we have been on vacation. He is NEVER on a leash. I completely forgot to bring his harness with us. So today I went and bought a really nice cushioned one. When we tried to put the new harness on him he yelped & yelped when we touched both of his front legs. BUT he jumps on and off of furniture like nothing is wrong. Go figure?? I have examined every inch of Buddy's body (pushed & pulled very gently) and he does not yelp in pain. Then other times we can just reach for him and NOT touch him and he will yelp out! Like just now he was walking past me on the bed and my computer cord BARELY touched him and he yelped so loud!! One other thing....he is breathing normally and he is NOT coughing but the first day we were here I did notice that he would cough or gag when on his leash so perhaps his neck/throat is sore from having the leash on. If all this is still going on tomorrow I plan to find a vet.

| http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-can-take.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...er-update.html Please get your baby to a vet. He sounds like he is in pretty intense pain, and he needs to be seen. We JUST went through this. The threads explain everything, but in a nutshell, Ryder started yelping at the slightest touch, and at the threat of being touched. However, once I had him, there was no pain reaction to any palpation all over his body. We took xrays and determined slight narrowing of at least two joint spaces in his back. We believe the acute pain was due to some trauma (jumping on/off something) and he was having excruciating nerve pain He was put on pred and bed rest for 4 weeks (we are a week and a half into it) and I have taken him for acupuncture which really seemed to help. Again, please get him to the vet. If you don't do that and wait until you get home, DO NOT allow him to run/jump/or be active. He needs to be confined, but really he needs either a steroid or nsaid to reduce the swelling. If he continues to be active he could do major damage. Please keep us updated. Good luck.

| UPDATE on Buddy My furbaby is back to his sweet happy self!!!! All this pain and agony was due to a GIGANTIC sand spur hid deep up between his sweet little toes!!! This sand spur was the size of a green pea with needles sticking out all over it!!! I made him a vet appointment to take him in and several hours before the appointment my sweet hubby was rubbing on Buddy trying to make him feel better and the darn spur stuck my hubby. My hubby said it was deep up in between his little toes!! Believe it or not....it took three grown men to get the spur out. Two to hold Buddy while my hubby cut the spur out. Thank goodness I was not around to witness this....I would of died of a heartache!!! Once it was out...he was soooooo happy!!! I gave him a hot bubble bath and trimmed the hair on his feet and legs. He is so happy!! Thank you all for your advise and support!!! I am attaching a photo of the sand spur...this photo was taken with my iphone so the picture is not that good. But at least you can see how big this spur was!!! My poor baby!!!
