| Administering pills. Hi, I collected my Yorkie from the hospital yesterday - he had an op for bi lateral Perthes disease - and was given a whole bunch of tablets for him. I am really having trouble getting him to take them, the codeine isn't too bad as the tablet is so tiny I can hide it in his food but giving him the capsule is proving to be mission impossible!! I have tried tilting his head back, opening his mouth and putting it as far into his mouth as possible, then closing his mouth and rubbing his throat, but he still spits it out. I am ready to give up to be honest, I have already wasted quite a few capsules. He is a really fussy eater at the best of times, so when I tried breaking the capsule and sprinkling it on his food, he refused point blank to eat it. Has anyone got any tips or suggestions to get the little tike to take his medication? Or I may be starting another thread offering him for adoption!!! From a very frustrated Mummy!!! |

| I always just shove it in his throat and hold their mouths closed until they swallow. They don't leave until they swallow the pills. If they do happen to spit it out, it goes right back in their mouth until they swallow it.

| Ellie takes a pill daily and I push it into the very back of her mouth...almost in her throat and she has no choice. If she spits it out, it goes back in. Have you tried breaking it open in a food that he really likes or does he not like anything?

| Cheese chaser! 1. Mix it with canned food. 2. The "Cheese Chaser" (my favorite) Mash the pill into a small piece of American Cheese. The Cheese Chaser works with even the nastiest tasting pills. We use it with heartworm meds and it even worked with that *nasty* Metroz-stuff the vet gives for diarrhea.

| try putting it in some cheese. i do that with london. or some fruit. make him think hes getting a treat! i think greenies makes something called a pill pocket that you stick a pill in, ive never tried it though. good luck!!! make it a happy experience for him and he'll be excited for it.

| Pill pockets Greenies pill pockets are a miracle worker. Just put the pill inside & shape it around it. You also could try covering the pill in cream cheese , it also works great !!

| You can also get pill pockets from your vet. I put it in cheese or put it so far back in the throat they have no choice but to swallow

| I have the same problem giving my little man his tablets. What ever I did he always managed to spit his tablet out. In the end I was getting desperate so I crushed his tablet to a fine powder and added a little water to it and used a syringe to get the medication in him. He still fights it, but it's a lot easier for me to make him take his tablets. Good luck x x x |

| I've had to give Prince meds for his collapsed trachea for amost two weeks. I wish I had tried this on day one. I boil a hotdog (Nathan's all beef) for about 10 minutes. (I do that to get a lot of the sodium out). I cut the end, scoop out a little of the inside, put the medicine in, and give it to him. I follow up with another small piece(without med) of hotdog quickly to make sure the first went down. He gobbles it down so fast that he does not realize that meds are in it. He's happy because he thinks he's getting a treat, and totally unstressed. That makes me very happy. Try this!!! It works. Keep the left over hotdog in the fride for the rest of the meds or periodic snacks. Let me know how it turns out. Of course, let the hotdog cool before giving it to him!! ;~)

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have the same problem, when Cali is sick, like now she won't eat and that's the only way I can get pills in her. If possible I ask for liquid medicine's and syringe it in.

| Hi everyone, I think I have conquered the problem! This morning I opened another pack of medicine that Denzil had to start today and inside there was a lovely syringe so I crushed his tablets and mixed them with water and hey-ho! it worked a treat! My lovely Mum sat him on her lap and opened his mouth and I fired the mixture down, he sulked and hid for a while but soon came out and wanted a fuss. He's asleep on his bed by my side as I type this, so hopefully he'll stay there and rest for a few hours! Best wishes to you all, and thanks for the advice and tips. Tracy xxx |

| Oh my... can i even begin to tell you all the "tricks" i had tried and failed with my latest Yorkie, Julz....My new pup, Dudley, i think i nailed it For liquids, the dosage was .5ml, ok, a can of tuna, scoop a bit on a teaspoon, squeeze the med's in tuna, stir it in and next, he's eating it off the spoon!!!! He loved it! For pills, i use a pill cutter, cut into little pieces (sometimes a powder too)and mix it a dab of Nuti-Cal...works well for me too. I couldn't get the liquid med's to blend well enough in this, so the smell of tuna covered the smell of the med right uo....HA!! Just my 2 cents for you!!!
