| Newbie: My baby is sick! On December 24th early in the AM around midnight or one am, Papi Chulo began to vomit. It looked like his dog food (hard kibble) and then he vomited again shortly after. It looked like a chunk of something but I didnt get a goodlook because someone else cleaned up. Afterwards he was playful. Around 3am, he became lethargic, wouldnt eat, but drank water. He had been throwing up all day Christmas eve (Just clear bile/spit as he hadn't eaten anything. I took him to the vet and was told he had obvious signs of tummy pains and wanted to hospitalize him over the holidays to take blood work, xrays, and multiple other tests. I wanted to wait another 12 hours to see if his condition worsened or got better and he seems to be a bit better today. He threw up once in the middle of the night last night and a tiny little bit of yellow bile thisafternoon. I am giving him Pedialite which is for children and babies. Helps with dehydration and loss of minerals from vomiting or diareah. I might mention Papi Chulo has not had a bowel movement in 24hrs because he has not eaten. This afternoon I also gave him about 3ml of pepto bismol as i read in many of the posts on here this can help with tummy pain. I bought him some chicken broth baby food (closest they had to chicken and rice) and I plan on making him eat it later on. He seems like he just wants to sleep. Yesterday I was panicking and about to send him to hospital for thousand dollars. Everyone (family/friends/people with small dogs) have told me to wait, and fast him, give him water, Pedialite, etc and he will get better and that the vet is unecessary. I would like to get your opinions on this situation...please. I am a proud new owner of a YT and he is 3 months old and weighs 2.6lbs. Please help my baby get better. Happy Holidays Amber |

| Because is is too young to have had all of his shots and he is so tiny, I would probably hospitalize him. PediaLyte is great if he is keeping it down. At this age, I'd be extremely concerned about parvo. Could somebody have given him some fatty meat the night before he started throwing up? If he does dehydrate which would be very easy in a pup his size, he could go into cardiac arrest. I hope he is feeling better. Welcome to YT.

| Thank you He is sleeping and has been all day. He threw up yellow very little bile earlier which I am guessing is because his tummy was empty. He is keeping the Pedialyte down, and is also eating baby food and water. He seems more active than he has the past 24 hours. There is a hop in his step again. All this point to good signs? If his progress keeps going well, I will not take him back to the vet until the holidays are over and it is time for his next shots. Opinions? ELLIE MAY: I must admit I believe he did get a piece of meat the night before! What will this do to his tummy, etc? |

Then it sounds an awful lot like pancreatitis. I would recommend Googling it. Some can come out of it at home but for some dogs it can be fatal. If he isn't 100% better and you think this is what it is, his pancreas needs to rest and he should really be on an IV (no food or water by mouth). The vet can test for it if you're concerned. My guess would be that this piece of meat was a pork product (including ham and bacon), dark meat turkey or possibly beef? Did his abdomen hurt to the touch? Hopefully something just upset his stomach though.

I personally would not take a chance with a puppy that young.

| uhoh geetting scared again The vet mentioned it might be that... will get him tested. He had tummy pain but seems to be better now that he is eating. He had a piece of rib the other day....it had tomato sauce on it. I don't think he got toooo much. When he went to the vet yesterday he had abdominal pain but he seems like it isn't hurting as much today. He hasn't thrown up the Pedialyte or Baby food, or pepto....progress? Just noting for those scared of him dehydrating, the Pedialyte has totally helped and he is drinking that and then water when I'm not giving him Pedialyte. He was definitely a bit dehydrated yesterday from vomiting although he was still drinking water. The Pedialyte seems to have totally turned this around and he looks healthier, fuller and happier. I am grateful for your comments and opinions Last edited by PapisMami; 12-25-2008 at 01:28 PM. |

| I'm not sure what it is, but I'd keep him with the vet until they figure it out.

The vet is closed for the Holidays and I am moving into my new house tomorrow. If his progress starts worsening instead of progressing I will take him into ER. I joined today because I searched yorkie vomiting after my vet visit, etc for more hope, and saw a lot of the yorkies owners on this site experience similar situations with their babies. Instead of giving them antibiotics, etc. I have given my baby home remedies, pedialyte, pepto, pumpkin, chicken and rice... it seems to be doing some good... Hopefully it is just an upset stomache like every body around believes it to be *including the vet**she wanted the tests just to be sure*

| My Yorkie had pancreatitis and it was similar except that she appeared to feel fine..just kept vomiting. She was fine the next day and never went to the vet. I found out it was pancreatitis a week later when she had an ultrasound for something unrelated. She kept throwing up food and could only hold down pedialyte. If it happened again, I don't know what I'd do because nothing (not even pedialyte) should be given by mouth so the pancreas can rest. However, you will probably be out $1000 to hospitalize him. The vet can do a Spec cPL (less than $50) to confirm the diagnosis and xray may not be necessary. Because he is so young and because no dog with pancreatitis should have anything by mouth, I would seriously consider taking him in. Even if that isn't what it is, that is still a good place for him at this age. As I'm sure you are realizing now, Yorkies should never ever be given fatty meat because they are prone to this.

I am an optimistic person so I am sure the problem is not pancreatic (finger's crossed). Does anybody know how long your dog will take to recover after eating fatty meat?

In severe cases, it can be many days of intense treatments. Depends on the case... Other people on YT have dealt with this but they probably aren't on today.

I fasted him for the required time, and he drank water throughout. He is now on baby food and Pedialyte and it is making a major difference. Going to call my parents vet and the ER vet for advice tomorrow. Thanks everybody!
