| small yorkie. big skin problems! please help us i'm sorry. i'm new here and am trying to figure all of this out... i probably should have posted this as a new thread the first time instead of replying to dave... hello everyone. i found this site while desperately searching for some answers to my little fella's problem. he has bumps all over his back and some dark spots on his belly. it started with a few small bumps on his back towards his tail and they turned into scabs so i took him to the vet. he thought it was allergies so he gave him a couple of shots and sent him home (after checking him for fleas). they seemed to go away after a coupld of weeks and then came back worse!! i took him back to the vet and he got more shots, changed his food, gave me medicated shampoo, and gave him antibiodics. they went away for a month or so and now, THEY'RE BACK AGAIN! he itches so bad!! i've been giving him 1/4 children's benadryl since he was about 1yr old when he gets allergies and it's not helping at all anymore. the spots seem to start out like little pimples or ant bites and then they turn into sores and scabs on his back. the spots on his belly start out like pimples also but they turn into grayish larger spots when they start to heal. he doesn't have sores on his ears or head... just his back and tummy. i'm soooo concerned and know if i take him back to the vet again it's just going to be the same ole allergy spill can anyone please help my harley divot? he's so miserable-my heart breaks for him brandi |

YT 3000 Club Member | I think I would try a different vet, did they check him for any kind of mange or something. What kind of food do you have him on. They can have allergies to corn, wheat and soy. Chester has allergies as well not food so I use salmon oil on wet food with his dry. I also rinse him off in the tub sometimes as well. I use laundry soap with no dyes or perfumes same with dryer sheets. Apple cider vinegar mixed with some water has helped. You need to make sure its not mange or some kind of infection before you try anything on it. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I know how miserable it is to hava an allergy baby. My Cali had such bad allergies, she was scratching her coat out and kept us up at night with her scratching. We tried diet change, shampoos and benydryl and a few other meds and nothing helped, except for a short time she was on a steroid. Finally the vet put her on Atopica, after I heard about it on here and asked her if Cali could take it. She ordered it for her and Cali is 100 % better. Very rarely scratches and her coat is so much better now. It is expensive, for a 5lb dog it is 2.00 a pill ans she has to take it everyday. We had hoped to get her to every other day but as soon as I stop she starts scratching again. Also you could try taking him to a dermatologist. Good luck. I hate seeing these babies so miserable.

| the vet put him on a kind of iams that has nothing in it- no preservatives or dyes or anything. he doesn't care for it, but he's been on it for a couple of months now. last night i bathed him in his medicated shampoo and he seems a little better this morning but i'm sure it's just a temporary fix. he hasn't lost any hair so far. he just has those itchy bumps all over his back. his coat is actually beautiful and most of the time he's playful and happy! it's just he'll stop to scratch a lot and sometimes he seems really miserable and whines. last night was one of those nights! i am going to monitor him closely today and see if the shampoo actually did any long-term good. if he's not better by tom we'll be off to find a new vet! it seems that it's more stressful for me to find him a vet than it is to find ME a DOCTOR! haha! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would find a different vet, first. A skin scraping needs to be done asap. Also, what are you feeding, exactly. Then, go to the very bottom of this page until you see the bar for a google search, and search just THIS website for PYODERMA - see if your baby's symptoms sound like that. I'm so sorry he is going through this, it sounds miserable.

| thank you so much! that sounds EXACTLY like what he has... i am not exactly sure what he is eating-i filled up his autofeeder with the small bag from the vet and threw the bag away! i know it was iams, in a white bag with purple writing, and it was large very dark brown round kibbles. the vet told me it was used for dogs with food allergies... i am going to ask him about pyoderma! i have been researching and printing off things that sound similar to my harley bug's problem. hopefully we can pinpoint this tomorrow!! thanks again! |

| RE: small yorkie. big skin problems! please help us Hi harleydivot, Tiger our 4 year old, developed identical symtomps you describe about July last summer (08). Took him to a vet in early September got a shot and Augmentin in a form of liquid, which cleared away his belly from the dirty like scabs and the dry like scabs on his upper to lower back (nothing on his head ears or chest almost). Late December things came back; waited for a while, and by late January things got bad as his scabs started to re-appear on this belly more and more. We took him to a vet again and got another shot, and antibiotics. This time it was in a form of pills, I think called Cepha (short for Cephalexin), and it was for 10 days as were the first time it was only for 7. We also got a Cortisoothe shampoo which the vet told us to bathe him twice a week for first 3 weeks than once a month. (we are past the twice a week / 3 week phaze) and his belly and skin is renewed id say 97 % still few light scabs which are cleaning up, but almost all gone. We also went with a new dry food diet, Royal Canin Veterinary formula of Potato and Duck. Vet recommended we change his Eukanuba Yorkie Formula which Tiger was on all of his life so far. (dry). Also I changed his Milk Bone treats prior to all vet visits but that didn't do much. It seems its a constant battle and for now we are seeing great results, but the real victory is to ensure over the next few weeks things don't reappear. Hope your problems are solved and I will update you and others in our fight and process of elimination. P.S. We also give Tiger Salmon Oil which he enjoys as much as he new food. Good Luck Spinfunky |

| Skin disorder My 17 year old Yorkie developed small warts in his last two years, medication, special shampoo, diet all changed. We had allergy tests done and he was allergic to grass, molds, foods etc. I think as he aged his immune system was weakening. He sadly has gone to greener pastures! |

| Those symptons sound like the ones first Mitzi and then Maggie had. We went to several vets and they got about everything under the sun that should have helped... it didn't until one of our new vets recommended Comfortis as flea prevention and ta-dah!!! Maggie's skin cleared up and we have no problems anymore (Mitzi passed away in the meantime...) With Maggie it is a flea bite allergy and frontline, K9 Advantix etc. didn't do the trick but Comfortis does. Even if you can't find a flea on them they are still there in the grass, the carpet, their bed and a single bite is enough to let the allergy with the skin rashes, dirty belly, itching and paw biting flare up again. I really hope your baby will improve soon and feel and look all healthy again! |
