Default seizures

My Uma is in the emergency clinic. She is having seizures. She has been having the seizures for over 3 hrs. The Vet. is trying to stop the seizures. She said they are epileptic seizures. I am scared. I feel so helpless.

Oh, my gosh - I am so sorry!! How terrifying! I'm sending good thoughts Uma's way and will think of her throughout the day. Hopefully, they can give her an antiepileptic via IV right away. Is this the first time ever she's had these? Is she a puppy? Did they start from low blood sugar or anything? My heart really goes out to you, seizures really are scary to see . Lots of hugs.

Yes, they are giving her the IV, and they gave her a shot of valium right away. Uma is 2 years old and has never had a sugar problem. 35 days ago she had her first seizure, and we took her to the emergency Vet. By the time we got her there the seizure had stopped. They ran all kinds of blood tests and other tests. All those tests came back normal so they thought it might be an isolated event. My sister says if they can't stop the seizures they will put her down. I can't stop crying. She is such a sweet girl.

Oh, how scary. As with humans, there really should be no reason they shouldn't be able to get these under control via meds. Then, it'd be a matter of probably keeping her on meds for life to control her seizure threshold ongoing. I am so sorry you're going through this!

We will pray for her. Our Pom has seizures too and we hold her so close when this happens. She is 16 years old. I am sure they will do everthing for your baby. She and you will be in our thoughts and prayers today.

Thank-you for giving me something positive. I just had to put my 7 yr. old poodle down in June of this year. I could not deal with another loss. My sister just really scared me. The vet said that as long as they can stop the seizure, and the wrong brain cell does not get damaged she will be alright. Mysister is a nurse and she told me that sometimes they push so much meds. to stop the seizures it can be fatal.

Thank-you. We should know something in a few hours according to the vet. Uma didn't respond to the valium shot and the seizures were coming every 30 secs.

They *are* trying meds other than valium aren't they? Valium is more of an adjunct therapy in terms of anti-epileptics; I mean, it can work - but when it doesn't, they need to move ON. There are other specific meds they should be using! I hope they have these available to them. If not, they should be getting them from an outside pharmacy asap.

Yes, they are giving phenobarbital? I just read on here that the kind of seizing Uma is experiencing is not good at all. I just hope they can stop them.

Umas' seizures involve a bowing of her back until her little rump almost touches her little head. There is no shaking. Her paws draw up behind her head and her bladder and bowels void. It is very scary, for her and me.

Just spoke to the Vet. Uma has had one more seizure, and they want tokeep her a few more hours. Sounds like they have slowed down.

I am so relieved to read this. Very good that she is getting phenobarb. in addition to the valium. Wish I could give you a big hug. I too would be going out of my mind with worry. I hope they can find the right balance of meds to keep these under control. Does your vet know of a neurologist you can consult with for continuing care?

Right now we are dealing with the emergency Vet. that is on call. Tomorrow we will get to talk to our regular Vet. They had to completely put her out and as she was coming up she had another seizure. That is why they are keeping her longer. I hope it can be controlled without keeping her asleep. This is just so sudden it is hard to wrap my mind around it.

Unlove sorry mama

I joined just so I could let you know I am so sorry. I am sending prayers to Uma, and I hope you get all the support you need to help you and Daddy through this. As you know, I fell for Uma, as did everyone who has ever had the privelage of meeting her.

How terrible! I'll send prayers that she will not have to be put down, and that she makes a complete and final recovery!
