Yes I am sure she did noy ingest any toxins. We just brought her home and she is laying in my lap with her little heploc still in her arm in case it starts again tonight. Both times she had seizures she had just woke up from sleeping. The first time was very mild compared to this and was very short lived,she was over it by the time she got to the Vet. Both times all tests were normal. The Vet. told us that normal tests are typical of epilepsy.

Unfortunately, there is no genetic marker for epilepsy so parents can't be tested before breeding. It also usually doesn't start until a dog is several years old so they could have had puppies before ever having that first seizure. They can also be carriers with no seizures themselves.

It just emphasizes how important it is to get a puppy from a reputable breeder who knows her lines generations back. Getting a puppy from someone who doesn't understand genetics and just puts two dogs together is like playing Russian Roulette with their future health.

Try to stay optimistic about Uma. Lady had two days of cluster seizures a few years ago. We were very concerned about permanent brain damage and it took her two weeks to recover. Most of her behavior afterwards, drunken gait, etc, was from a valium hangover, not the seizures. It took a few weeks to get it out of her body.

She is home now! They left the heploc in her arm just in case the seizures start again tonight. They are putting her on 10 mlg. of Phenobarbatal 2 times a day, I'm to start that tomorrow because they said she is loaded up for today. She cannot stand without falling over and her poor little hind legs splay like a newborn calf. She did eat for me...poor baby was starving. I had to hand feed her though because she couln't stay upright to eat it. We go to see our regular Vet. tomorrow. Hopefully she will be o-kay tonight. Leaving that heploc in worries me.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Uma.
I went through this with one of mine in Dec. He was in intensive care for 10 days with a neurologist. We never found out the cause. He had every test. He has been fine since. He was treated with IV Valium. All his tests were normal.

I'm sure she was starved. Did you know that having a seizure makes their blood sugar drop and they can go hypo? Normally we try to give a little vanilla ice cream after a seizure to bring their sugar up and help them recover.

ICE CREAM AFTER A SEIZURE

Don't worry about the wobbliness for now. As I said, Lady was like that for almost two weeks after a two day episode of cluster seizures. It's all the valium.

I will pray that Uma has no more seizures and you can get her epilepsy under control. Medication is the key. Lady is on both Phenobarbital and potassium bromide and hasn't had a seizure in two years.

BTW, since you are starting pheno, you will need to protect her liver as it can damage it. I've been giving Lady milk thistle for nine years and she is just starting to show elevated liver values. Marin is the best formulation because it also has Vitamin E. Uma would need 1/4 tablet daily.

Marin for Small to Medium Dogs (30 Tablets)

So far she has been O-K. I am a little scared to go to sleep though. I can't hear if it starts again,I have to see her. DH will be upset if I sit up because he worries about me, but I don't think I will be able to sleep with that heploc in her arm. Thank-you for the prayers for my baby.

Yes, I think you guys really do care....and that means more than you can imagine. This has been as hard for me to deal with emotionally as if she were my born child. Yes, the hugs are appreciatd! Just what I needed.....Thank-you.

It is a truly awfull thing to have to go through, I cannot imagine dealing with my girl being in IC for that length of time. Hopefully this will never happen to your boy again. I think it would be easier if these things happened to us instead of our babies.

The Vet. did mention that our regular Vet. might add another medication. Thanks for the info. on the milk thistle, I was told she would need tests on her liver function twice a year maybe more and I was worried about liver damage....very much worried.

I can't tell you how happy I am to read this ! HUGS to little Uma. I thought about her all yesterday.

I'm not surprised at the wobbliness with all that valium - dogs often react to valium that way and I'm sure she has a lot in her system. Please update as you can. If they can keep the proper meds balanced for her, I think she can do great. I'm so happy she's home with you.
