| Update for uma For all those concerned about Uma...thank you so much!!! I can not speak for my mama...I can only update on Uma for her. She lately is able to get on here in the wee hours of the morning when most of y'all are sleeping...lol. Uma went back to her vet at 9 am and and was back home after 3:30 this afternoon. She will have to go back tomorrow at 9 am and will be observed for probably the same amount of time. On Friday she may possibly be sent to Wilmington for surgery. This is where I get to the good and bad news. I'll start with the good news first. They still haven't ruled out epilepsy, but they have introduced a hopeful new diagnose. They did two xrays on Uma, and found that her bones are fused starting over her hips and heading toward her tail. Right before the fusion begins, there appears to be a slight compression. HOW IS THIS GOOD NEWS??? Because the vet thinks that maybe JUST maybe the pain caused the attacks. PERHAPS NO EPILEPSY!!! IT CAN ALSO BE FIXED!!! The vet has diagnosed her with Degenerate Disk Disease. Here comes the bad news. She still might have to epilepsy. She is not allowed to be jarred at all, because the chances for being paralyzed are extremely high if the fusion or compression breaks. Mama has to stay up all night again giving Uma her Rebound every two hours. (Thank goodness she has my Dad to take over shifts) Mama has to give Uma a fourth of Phen just in case she may have a seizure. The doctor fears if an attack occurs, well...the breakage could occur. Ending on a happier note...the vet gave Uma a shot of Rimadyl and under his supervision was able to walk around a little. He warned my mom to not attempt to try to make her walk at home though. Tomorrow they will give Uma another shot of Rimadyl under his supervision again. Sorry that was sooo long and I hope I got most of it accurate. My mama will correct anything wrong I wrote when she is finally able to take a minute for herself. Thanks for the thoughts and concern! I know your good Karma and thoughts are helping Uma and my parents get through this! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh my goodness....my heart just breaks for little Uma. I wish I could help, I wish I could make her all better. Your Mom is just an angel. Honestly, I've been thinking about Uma all the time, told my husband about her - we talked about her on our hike this weekend and sent our good thoughts her way. We are all PULLING FOR UMA and for your family.

| Update on uma Happily Uma was not held at the vets today. She will have to go back tomorrow around 9 am again. Also, happily my parents only had to pay for the meds this time...a much needed break in their wallets. My parents will be able to get a little more sleep than the past several nights. They did scans on her and she does have neurological damage. She flunked a pain test in both of her back paws. She also flunked the turning her toes under test. She couldn't turn them by herself...and once turned by hand could not draw them back out. Similar to "foot drop", I guess. She has serious inflammation around the fusion and compression, for that they put her on Prenazone. She has to have that every twelve hours. The vet said the pain she is in is similar to someone jumping from a high place and landing squarely on their feet, except the pain would be more centered in the tail bone region. Hopefully the Prenazone will get the inflammation down and ease her pain. She has to eat a "chewable" to coat her stomach because the Prenazone can cause ulcers. She is only to have Rebound if she doesn't drink plenty of fluids, especially being on Prenazone. If she does have a seizure she must have the Phen and be taken to the E.R. ASAP, the compression is cutting into her spinal cord. The risk of permanent paralysis is still a major threat. She can not poo or pee with out support still. Two out of three vets have said epilepsy, the third associating the seizures with the disk cutting her spinal cord causing so much pain. Mama thinks it is epilepsy because even though the fusion was already there, the seizures bowing her back caused the compression and cutting of spinal cord. Uma never presented any problems before the attacks. She always held a level top back. (aww...i miss how she use to be...yorkie kisses galore and so lovable and full of energy) When she goes to Wilmington they will do an MRI and a CAT scan on her, therefor learning if surgery is needed. Once again I hope I got everything right. She just wanted the people that are concerned to know she is not dissing y'all...just has her hands and her heart full at this time. She calls me with updates for me and her yorkie talk friends. Thanks again...have a great day!!! |

| Thank you so much for updating us. I will continue to pray for Uma. I agree with your mother and the two out of three vets. I think she probably does have epilepsy. Can't they keep her on pheno as a precaution until she has her appointment? I'd be terrified of another episode of status epilepticus and further damage to her disc. |

| Vet. visit Sorry I haven't had time to update, but DD is doing a good job for me. Uma still can't turn her toes right side up by herself if they are turned under, but the vet. said her legs are getting stronger. Yesterday she flunked the pain test and the toes under test so pretty much the same today. Her back is not as arched and last nite she was actually lying on her back sleeping! She does seem to have trouble knowing when she has to wee or doodle, hopefully this will pass. Today she has been very active in her playpen, and showing her "happy face". Today The Vet. retracted yesterdays diagnosis for her back,Degenerative bone Disease, saying she isn't old enough and she is the wrong breed and her back isn't long enough. So, todays guess is Menengitis of the brain and spinal cord, and we continue the 7 pm dose of Pheno., continue the twice daily doses of Prednisone and the chewable tummy protectant, continue the Rebound electrolyte replacement, and he added twice daily antibiotic Clinsol. I am just so happy she is feeling better! Oh! He removed that heploc from her little arm!! So today DH and me and both girls all took a nap at the same time! I am still fearfull of the seizures esp. with her back like it is, but DH and me were getting mighty run down. Thanks go out to everyone for their concern for my Uma, and the support that has been extended my way. She is not out of the woods yet, but at least she isn't in as much pain and has periods of playfullness.
