| looking for answers I am a fairly new Yorkie owner. We have a little male that is 5 months old, he is so loving and adorable that we thought we would get another one. I guess you can never have just one!! I even posted on this site to ask advice about adding another one so soon. Well 10 days ago we brought home our little girl. She is 13 weeks old and weighs 2 lbs. She is just the most precious thing we ever saw. The first night home we noticed a cough so the next day I took her for a vet check. The gave her a cough medicine to use at night and started her on an antibiotic. She seemed to be okay for the first few days but her cough did not clear up. On day # 8 she woke up with a really wet cough and would not eat. We took her to the ER vet and they did lab work and a chest x-ray. She had pneumonia and also the x-ray showed an enlarged heart. So we decided to bring her home with a new antibiotic and spent the entire day yesterday holding her and feeding her from a syringe. As soon as my vet opened this morning I was waiting outside. After the exam they noted that she now has an irregular heart beat. So they kept her for IV fluids and IV antibotics. They are also doing a EKG. She has lost 3 ounces in 5 days and is so sick!! So now we are wating to hear what the prognosis is for her. I have searched the web and have read so much information regarding how this effects dogs. So now I am looking for anyone that has had a baby with an enlarged heart and am desperate to know if they can live a normal life. We have already spent over $1000 on vet bills this last week. But we opted to take her to our trusted vet. I know that we could take her back and get another puppy or get our money back. But that is not how love works..........the breeder has not offered to help with her medcial bills. So my husband and I decided that is okay with us............she is our baby and we will do the very best we can for her. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!! |

| I don't have any experience with enlarged hearts, but I just wanted to say, bless you and your hubby for trying to do everything you can for this little one. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted.

| I hope someone here can advise you with the enlarged heart =o( I just wanted to say I am sorry your baby is sick, and I hope she gets better! And I wanted to let you know, since you said the breeder wasn't helping pay the vet bill, in case you didn't already know about it. You can apply for care credit, it's like a credit card but it takes care of health expenses and you can use it on your pets as long as your vet will accept it.

| Oh no I have no experience with Yorkie heart issues and with the irregular heartbeat there may be something going on but Yorkies as a breed do have larger hearts and that is normal for them. Did your vet take this into consideration?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | My suggestion take her to a cardiologist to determine if her heart is actually enlarged. I suggest this...because my Reese was mis-diagnosed with an enlarged heart via an x ray taken at the ER vets. What Reese actually had at the time was coccidea (a parasite)...given treatment for that and he was fine. However, I still made an appointment for a consult with a cardiologist because of the large heart diagnosis. The cardiologist explained to me...vets use an visual image chart to compare heart sizes....as a breed Yorkies have bigger hearts than this chart and it is not truly enlarged. Reese had an ultrasound done...for my peace of mind and he's fine. Btw, in case you are interested...I paid $225.00 for that visit and ultrasound. Pneumonia sometimes occurs with kennel cough. Depending on how much fluid is in her lungs...her lungs could be pressing against her heart causing an irregular beat. Get a diagnosis from a cardiologist. If she truly has heart issues...that's who needs to be treating her. Good luck...and I hope you got a "mis-diagnosis" too.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I googled tons of images of enlarged heart pictures before Reese had his ultrasound...I will say...nothing I found look like the picture in his x rays.

| update Thanks for all of the well wishes and quick responses. Just spoke with the vet and thought I would post a quick update. She is more alert due to the IV fluids. (And probably due to the fact that she is also in a strange place and not happy about that). Both vets agree that she does have a irregular heart rate with extra irregular beats.... so we gave our consent do another EKG, cardiac ultrasound, and electoncially send these for a cardiac consult. So again we are just waiting!! Thanks again for the kind words and advice....I will keep you posted!! |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I hope they are "wrong"...and she's just ill from the kennel cough. I know she's been ill so you may not be able to judge...but has she acted like a puppy? Playing etc? It's hard to know since she has the pneumonia...but a puppy with heart problems will show other symptoms...lethagic, winded after playing...or simply not interested in playing. I hope you get good news...

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I hope the new tests bring good news. I had a Yorkie diagnosed at 5 years with an enlarged heart and it did not effect him. He died at 13 of a different condition. I will keep your baby in my prayers.
