| Seizures and not urniating Hello! I am new to this forum but have been looking through the list of health questions for days and decided to tell you my story. Maybe someone will be able to help me. I have a beautiful new puppy, Riley. She is 9 weeks old and is teacup yorkie/maltipoo mix. My sister-n-law gave her to me a few weeks ago. The first couple of weeks were AWESOME! We instantly fell in love with her. I got her first set of shots and noticed she was tired and sore the next day but otherwise healthy. Then 4 days later we awoke to find her breathing very labored. First, I gave her syrup because I had been warned about hypoglycemia. Next, I rushed her to my vet. They checked her glucose level which was fine (but I had just given her syrup) ran a few x-rays ( I didn't know if maybe she had been stepped on) and gave her a steriod shot for breathing. They sent her back home with me. I was going crazy with worry because she was fine the night before and had been in her crate all night. Well, a few hours after arriving home she still wasn't breathing any better. So, I rushed her back to the vet and when I pulled in the parking lot she had her first seizure. She started chomping her jaws, foaming at the mouth, urinating and defacating on herself. This only lasted about 30 seconds. Then immediately after that she takes off running back and forth as fast as she can then she kinda falls over. They kept her in the hospital for about 5 days. At one point she was having one seizure about every hour or so. I brought her home on a Friday thought maybe she was just hypoglycemic made sure she ate every couple of hours but then she started having seizures again Saturday night. She had about 10 before I stopped counting. She was very tired, depressed, and dehydrated. I took her back to the vet and he kept her another 5 days. This time he did give her a low dose of anti-seizure medicine (she weighs 1.5 lbs) Picked her up yesterday and it's amazing. She looks 100% better. However, the vet told me she doesnt' want anyone to touch her. She starts barking and biting you if you touch her. She even bit her own leg and started bleeding. (Ouch) Thought maybe she was just scared of people because she has been poked and proded so much at the vet. But then I noticed that she is not urinating. She has only urinated one time since I brought her home yesterday. Is that normal? Also, the vet said that her running around really fast was not part of the seizures. What do you think? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry your baby is so sick. We had a sheltie when I lived at home that had seizures and he would run from one end of the house to the other back and forth for a few minutes and he was totally in a trance like state and then he would have an accident and lay down. he was always tired and quiet afterwards. Maybe you could get a second opinion. Praying your baby will be ok

| From your story, your vet really didn't know what was wrong with her, is that right? If so, I'd try another vet. It's so important to know if what you are dealing with is hypoglycemia, or something else. I would guess your vet doesn't want to stress her out, so doesn't want anyone handling her. Still, you need to stay bonded with her. I have some little fleece squares of cloth that I wrap around my puppies sometimes to hold them close and make them feel secure. Perhaps your Riley will let you hold her for awhile if you wrap her in something soft and just hold her close. You might try this and then assess whether it stresses her out too much. If so, you may have to wait until she settles down again to get close to her. I hope this was a one time thing for both of you. Best wishes.

| The failure to urinate could be dehydration, or she could be so stressed she is holding it. My little girl (4 lbs) took a trip with me and only peed 3 times in 3 days. She was just fine, and drank water, but held it for some reason. Check her gums. If they are a nice pink color, she isn't dehydrated. Is she eating okay? Is she peeing on pee pads? If so, what color is the pee?

| Oh I am so sorry you are having these troubles. Something sure doesnt sound right about not urinating. Do you think she could have possibly gone somewhere and you did not see her do it? I would let my vet know that as soon as possible. Is she drinking enough water? Poor little both of you. I know she has to be tired, and you also. Please keep us updated on how she is doing. I'll keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

| Has she been checked for liver shunt? Or could it be AAI/AAS?

| My thoughts and prayers are with you and Riley. Do get another opinion...something just isn't right. She's only 9 weeks old, still so young...I wonder if the shots could have caused this. I'm just curious because you said she was fine until 4 days after the shots. Does she seem to be eating and drinking normally? I really do wish her well, hope you find the answer you're looking for.

| Typically, puppies do not have idiopathic epilepsy...Their seizures are usually caused by something whether it be liver shunt or a myriad of other things... I hope your pup gets better. I think you need a 2nd opinion.

| If your little puppy is 9 weeks old, and you have had her for a few weeks already, then I would think she was way too young to have had shots. Those should never be given before 12 to 16 weeks of age. I would be willing to bet your baby is suffering from the shots, and to add to that she has been given even more medications. It's a miracle she hasn't died already. I would find a specialist, and get yourself a sling to carry her in. I had a little foster girl that came to me half dead from so many shots and medications. The first thing my Vet. did was to take her off of all medications and try and get her healthy. It took months to get her back to normal. I home cooked for her and thru trial and error, I came up with all the foods she could and couldn't eat. She is now a very happy healthy and spoiled only child living in Newark, DE. I'm so sorry your dealing with this. I know exactly how you feel. Warm hugs and prayers comming your way. |

| Vaccination reactions Did your vet check for encephalitis? There is another Yorkie owner on here whose dog started having symptoms the day she got her shots. She ended up having encephalitis. It is a neurological condition that can cause seizures. I am not sure about the urination issue, but ask about encephalitis. They treat it with steroids and a type of chemo. How is your baby? |
