| Was this hypoglycemia?? Need advice please!! Its for little Chanel It started last wednesday, during the day Chanel seemed just fine, but at night she was NOT playing like she usually does, she didnt want any treat i offered her, was shaking like she was feeling cold, she curled up on my husband's lap and slept, we thought she was just feeling tired and probably miserable because shes teething, i noticed she had a bit of a running tummy and she had NO apetite, yesterday she was VERY quiet, hardly played, again NO apetite and looked exhausted, i NEVER gave hypogycemia a thought, she will be 5 months next week, however, lastnight i sat with her and again, was shaking, and feeling miserable, i tried hand feeding her, she refused her own food, i tried giving her bread, all kinds of treats including her favourite ones to no avail, i tried to make her drink some water, she refused EVERYTHING i gave her, she vomited some clear water, so i thought that was a sign of her feeling hungry, at THAT point i remembered NUTRICAL and offered her some, she refused that so i forced some down, half hour later i checked on her, and she was just laying on the couch shaking, i picked her up and she was limb, at that point i told my husband that if she is not reacting within the next half hour, i was going to rush her off to emergancies, i kept talking to her and slowly she was starting to respond, i gave her another dose of nutrical and she licked it off my finger, i was relieved to see SOME life in her, i was SO worried, i sat up with her most of the night, she was walking around a bit, finally took her to bed with me, put her in pj's and wrapped her up in her blanket, this morning she was fine again, i have given her nutrical every few hours today, is that ok? and should i keep giving it to her for the next few days, will she get this again? please any advice is welcome!! This is the FIRST time i have ever experienced this, none of my yorkies have had that before and i can tell u THIS scared the daylights right out of me

| The Nutrical was good, but I would seek medical attention ASAP. Is she eating yet? |

| Does sound like a low blood sugar attack. I was told by Maggie's breeder to only give the Nutrical, if they haven't eaten for 8 hours. If you give it too often, they will have no appetite for food.

| It sounds like her stomach was upset..maybe not full blown hypoglycemia because they usually are unsteady, wobbly and then fall into an unresponsive coma and sometimes have seizures. The shaking is a symptom and the nurtical is a good thing. She may have an obstruction of some sort too. Has she had a bowel movement? I would definitely be on the safe side and take her to the vet. Hope she feels better soon. |

| Hi people, thanx for all your replies, i took Chanel to the vet this morning early, he checked her out, i explained what happened and all ( my own vet is on vacation and this replacement "vet" was horrible ) he hardly listened to what i had to say, but anyhow, he gave my baby meds: Stomorgyl and Diarsanyl, she has a bowel infection, he emptied her anal glands and took her temp, was fine, the Diarsanyl is a food suppliment and the Stomorgyl is a cure she has to finish, wen i told him that she hardly eats, he said: Well, shes only small so she wont eat much, just give her some nutrical, i was like do i look THAT stupid i couldnt wait to get out of there, he was plain friggin rude and made me feel like i dont know my own dogs Next time i go to my own vet i will let him know how "happy" i was with his replacement!! Anyhow, the most important thing is that Chanel is looking and feeling better now, shes playing and bossing Dounia ( lab ) around again, her stool is still very runny, but at least shes moving and jumping around again!

| I would be royally P.O'd with that vet!!! Your baby needed a bit more attention than it sounds as if he gave her. Give her the Nutrical maybe 2-3 times a day til she starts eating. BUT, try her on baby meats and rice cereal; or smash her regular puppy kibble into coarse meal consistency and mix with baby meat. I ADVISE PARENTS TO GIVE THE BABY WHATEVER THEY WILL EAT. You can always change a bad habit if you have a healthy dog but it is too late if you do not get them to eat something. I want to tell vets to get real sometimes..WOULD THEY LET THEIR BABY HUMAN GO WITHOUT EATING? You bet your sweet a** they wouldn't if they had any sense. You are right to worry about your baby but don't panic. Seems you have a handle on what to do. I give my babies Kaopectate 1/2-1ML but not til after 24 hours so they can eliminate the bug if it is just a bowel thing. Please let us know how your baby is doing. I will say prayers for you and your wee one. |

| I so agree with you about vets telling you "they'll eat when they want to - just starve her down! That's what they told be with Sabrina at 2.5 pounds when she was allergic to some dog food and wouldn't switch to another! Even a few ounces is horrible when you are that tiny - it has to be. When Sabrina gets tummy upsets - my vet said that the Gerber baby food - turkey and gravy - could be used (she's allergic to chicken) and you can mix it with rice if you want to. Really helps Sabrina keep something in her stomach when she's ill. I keep it on hand now. Hope she's better. It's just like with human babies - they can't talk and it just worries me to death when they are sick. |

| If she has loose bowels, I would be very careful about "pushing" different types of foods. I had a similar situation with Peppy -- 10 months 2 1/2 lbs, he wouldn't eat and I was trying this and that and then something different just to get him to eat. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have chosen not eating. I doubt he would have "starved", hypoglocemia would have killed him. Anyway a trip to the vet was in order. She "prescribed" Science Diet a/d which is specifically for finicky/sickly/non eaters. The first day it was all I could do to get Peppy to eat a teaspoon. He now scarfs down his 1/2 can in about 3 minutes -- and the huge plus is that he is now eating dry Innova EVO. Peppy is now a whopping 2 lbs. 15 ounces (on a good day). I am hoping we can hit three lbs. and stay there. LOL We have dental surgery looming in our near future (removal of retained baby teeth). As soon as that is overwith and his mouth gets back to normal then I will be slowly weaning him off of the a/d and get him eating just the Innova. Good Luck!!! One word of caution...... a lot of folks feed commercially prepared baby food and with good results, however, baby food often contains onion and garlic as flavor enhancers, but they are toxic to dogs. A dog that already has an upset tummy doesn't need to have to deal with known toxins. |

| Hi people, thanx again for all the help, you guys are the best! Chanel is doing a lot better, she is eating her own kibble which i soak in hot water for a while before giving it to her so it gives it a bit of a gravy smell/flavour, shes SO good at taking her meds, even the pill's are no problem to her and the diarsanyl ( food suppliment ) she licks off my finger, i am SO relieved to see this child better, its amazing to me how these little girls connect to each other, Chelsey keeps giving Chanel kisses as if shes kissing her little sister better .... how precious is that?! i love my girls to pieces, seeing one of them so ill made me sick to my stomach! I am not giving Chanel any treats till her tummy settles down, its still messy poo, i will try some baby foods on her, shes also a finicky eater, i will read the ingredients on the bottles first before giving it to her!
