| Collapsed Trachea, possible Enlarged heart Hello everyone. I've been reading up on everyone's threads about their little babies with Collapsed Trachea's and enlarged hearts but here is Biggie's story. I made a thread about this a while ago but, we attempted to go on a road trip to Florida (we're from Michigan) and Biggie has never had any problems with being in the car. To make a long story short we had to turn around because Biggie was throwing up and honking and having troubled breathing. Ever since then he has honked when excited. Today he had his annual vet visit for rabies and other vaccines and I asked our vet about his breathing. Biggie only has trouble breathing and honks when he is excited (IE: going on walks, ppl coming over, any excitement). So our vet recommended an X-ray. After the x-ray was done, she told us that Biggie may have en enlarged heart and that we should go to a Vet-Cardiologist to verify this information. My bf thinks that the vet is trying to get more money out of us because Biggie would need an ultra sound at the Cardiologist which is $335 on top of the $309 we spent already on his annual visit plus x-ray. When we left I wanted to just ask her what medications we need or what we can do!? She left us basically with nothing. Our vet didn't give us any information about what we can do now except see this Cardiologist. Has anyone ever seen a vet-cardiologist? I want whatever is best for my Biggie and will do whatever it takes but I also don't want to be taken for all my money??

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Reese was mis-diagnosed with an enlarged heart. Due to symptoms he had one morning when we woke up....we took him in to the ER vet's. An x ray was performed and we were told they thought his heart was enlarged. We were referred to a cardiologist. The ER vet kept Reese that afternoon....during that time...continued to run tests and we learned he had ciccodia. I made and kept the appointment with the cardiologist...to ease my mind. Reese did not have typical cardiac symptoms...being winded, not playing, nothing...but I wanted to know for sure. During the appointment with the cardiologist...she explained that vets have a image chart of a "normal" heart that is used as a comparison...however, in yorkies...who, as a breed, have larger hearts (don't we already know that? ) it isn't a medical condition. I still paid $225 for an ultrasound and visit....Reese is right as rain. Unless Biggie has some other symptoms...I would say his heart is probably fine. But you have to make the decision whether or not to hear that definitively from the cardiologist. I didn't want to spend any time...wondering.

| ^ good to hear your baby is ok. I've been talking it over with my parents and they think I should go just to be sure. I think so too. They also said that Biggie can live with a Collapsed Trachea and an enlarged heart. The problem with his heart is if he goes into congestive heart failure. I'm still wondering what medications he would need for a Collapsed Trachea?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I had a Yorkie, Gracie years ago that had collapsed trachea but it was very severe and collapsed in the thoracic area so surgery wasn't an option. She did go into congestive heart failure and pulmonary disease. We treated her for a year with bronchodilators and heart meds but she was so bad I had to let her go. But hers was a very severe case. My 11 year old pom has a collapsed trachea, among other conditions, but it is not bad enough to warrant meds and she has had it for years, she just went into congestive heart failure but is doing great on a diuretic and a heart medicine. The vet said if she didn't respond to the meds she would refer me to a cardiologist for further testing. How old is your baby? Maybe ask the vet to try some basic meds to see if he improves. My vet said that if the heart medicine didn't work, it was a very general one, then further testing would determine which part of her heart wasn't functioning and more specific drugs could be used but a cardiologist would have to determine that. Good luck and keep us posted,

| Biggie is 4 years old. I talked to the vet after we left and she wants us to see the Cardiologist befroe we do anything. Biggie has been honking for about a year and because he only does it sometimes, she wasn't concerned to medicate him right away. Thanks for your kind words Patti... and sorry you lost your Gracie. Does your Pom live a normal life with a Collapsed Trachea?? For example, going on walks ect.... since Biggie has been having breathing problems when excited, we've limited his walks and car rides. Which I miss...

| **UPDATE** Biggie and I went to the Cardiologist today and he got an echocardiogram which showed that he does NOT have an enlarged heart or heart disease!! His heart appears larger because he is a smaller dog. The vet did give us medication to treat his collapsed trachea and we're hoping it helps. Thanks for everyone's concern and well wishes.
