| You can buy grits at the grocery story where they sell the oatmeal and malto meal. They come in a small box. I love grits. I never would of thought of feeding them to the ants. They do swell when you cook them so I can see how that might work. BTW, I like my grits with butter and grated cheese. Grits are made from ground corn. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | We have had several bouts with the fire ants. I've tried many different things, but since we have a pond with fish, and Joey, we no longer can use some of the treatments. The best thing I've found are the ant stakes that say kill fire ants. I've found them at Home Depot as well as Walmart, although sometimes I couldn't find them at HD. Anyway, they work great. We get lots and lots of the and put them behind the pond and places that Joey doesn't have access to. I also have a few in places that he can reach, but if you are really careful when you install them, they can't pull them out of the ground. The good thing about them is they won't kill the lizards that I personally love and who keep other bugs in order. All the other sprays and granules kill the lizards (geckos?) They will only kill off the ants. We usually have to buy a new supply each year, but they always work immediately.

| I am so glad that little Marcel is ok. Sending hugs to that sweet baby . We have a serious problem with fire ants in our pastures. Occasionally a mound will appear in the yard and we treat it with an ant bait/killer. I don't let the kids outside when we are treating a mound. Fire ants are terrible! I am so happy to read this post! I've been wondering if it works. Ann, think of grits like white polenta. That's pretty much all it is. It's yummy! ETA- in addition to diatomaceous earth, I've also been reading about benificial nemotodes. I was thinking of giving them a try for fleas but there are also varieties that kill ants. I have no idea how well they work but I seriously hate poisoning my yard.

| Ants hold their breath? For real? How do they know? How do you study and observe that? Seriously. I have this vision of some little scientist with his magnifying glass standing there watching some ant blow out his cheeks holding his breath like a 2 year old does.....

| That must have been so painful. I am glad he is doing ok. Nasty fire ants, I hope your able to get rid of them. My sister's cat was just bitten by a rattle snake. The cat lived, thankfully. But the vet bill was giant. I have to watch out for tranchula's, snakes, owls all kinds of threats out here. There is a field behind us, we have to be very careful.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I always give Marcel 1/2 - 1mL of liquid Children's Benadryl and I give Wylie (7.5 lbs) 1.5-ish mL.

Take ants and drown them. You can do this by putting them in a bowl and dropping water on them until they stop struggling. Leave them in there until you think they are dead. I don't think we ever waited longer than about 5 minutes. Take ants out and pour a little mountain of salt over them. In a few seconds or so, the ants will come crawling out. It's a miracle!

| and if you've ever seen the fireants when they are near the lake/pond edge,,etc, and the water rises,, they'll make a ladder of ants,, from the mound to the top of the water,, only ones who drown are the workers who are sacrified to save the colony,, but most of the entire colony is a floating colony of fireants on top of the water,, floating on the bodies of worker ants til they float into something to glom onto,, FYI,,,,do not make the mistake of whackin' em with a big stick!!! as for getting rid of em,, cornmeal works well too,, but i think grits are better,,,
