| Bathing Should I wait for a few weeks to bathe my puppy as he needs a bath because he's got poopy in his hair on his butt (which I need to trim) and got mats on his face fur from wet food... He is getting over being sick with kennel cough. He's only sneezing a few times a day now. Shoudl I wait to bathe him until he's fully recovered? I'm going to bathe him in my bath tub with warmish water and let him play around in it if he wants. Should I blow dry his hair? I'm a new dog-mommy. I've only ever had cats so I'm not sure what to do. :-) Thanks! Brittany and Bentley

Senior Yorkie Talker | I would wait to give him a bath, until he is feeling 100% better, between baths I usually freshen up my puppy with pet wipes, and use a grooming spray when I brush him and comb him. I also spray water lightly on his face with a spray bottle and comb out his face hair after he is done eating, and at night before he goes to bed, I use a doggie face wash to clean his face.

| I usually wipe my furbabies' faces off right after eating and before they go to bed. Chipper usually had more tangles in his hair than my others because he has longer hair. After I dampen the face hair I use a fine comb and gently, starting at the end, comb the tangles out. I also use the comb part of any eyebrow brush to clean the gunk from his eyes. To comb the rest of his hair I spray a detangler on and comb through the hair. Most of the time I have read that it is okay to bathe your Yorkie once a week as long as you use a pet shampoo that is gently and a conditioner. Just lately I read about watering down conditioner and leaving it in if your furbaby has coarse cottony hair. I have one. Tried that method and his hair was marvelous. Some have talked about leave-on Pantene conditioner. You could do a "search" and I'm sure you would find many, many threads about bathing. Good luck with your new furbaby. If you post a question and it gets lost in the many threads we have, please feel free to message me and I will try to help you. I don't have all the answers but I can help find someone who might.

| Whoops!!! I missed the being sick part. I'd wait, too. Combing and brushing helps a great deal. There are also waterless shampoos.

| You don't have to give a full bath to clean your baby. Turn his head toward you and hold his bottom under the faucet, wet it, and pour a little shampoo on it. Scrub well and rinse under the warm water. Towel dry. If you don't soak him you won't have to use a hair dryer. Better to clean him up now than to wait. Use wipes on his face, or just wet your fingers and gently wipe the whiskers and mouth area. Good luck with your little baby.

| Thank you guys, those replies make sense. I have baby wipes that have no alcohol in them and they have vitamin E and aloe, I think that will be ok to use on him, so I'll do that tonight. That should help soften the mats so I can comb them out. I didn't think about that till just now. :P Thanks again! HUGS Brittany and Bentley

| I was able to trim out the mats around his mouth. I prefer him to have a short style cut as it's too much maintenance for my family to have him long-coated. Plus he looks adorable in the short hair do. Hehehe I also got out the matting in the back end. There was only to little spots. We've been so overwhelmed with trying to get him well this past weekend that finally now he's doing 90% better than he was. He had a siezure due to lack of eating/hypoglycemia Saturday ngiht and since then he's been fine. We were feeding him baby food via syringe for Sat night and Sunday. I went out and bought a few wet foods that I hoped he'd eat. It's working. He's eating several times a day and being a bouncing baby boy. :-) Yay! Huggs Brittany and Bentley

| It is also important to get the dried poop off of him. You do not want that accumilating because your new Yorkie baby won't be able to go potty well... Just be very gentle and patient. |

| Yeah, that's what I was worried about. I checked his bum out and it wasn't badn enough to prevent evacuation but just a little annoying-feeling I'm sure. I can't imagine having mats in my hair. I've had a short hair style for so long that I can't remember tangles much. I do know I hated them and always had my hair tangle-free. I can't imagine how he feels having tangles aroundh is mouth. Geesh. Poor baby. We've been so one-track-minded with getting him out of the danger zone health-wise that we haven't paid much attention to his coat. Now we can start working on that more and more now that he's doing so well.
