He is getting over being sick with kennel cough. He's only sneezing a few times a day now. Shoudl I wait to bathe him until he's fully recovered?

And how do I prevent mats from occurring on his face?? Do I constantly have a wet washcloth around to help remove the food on his face? Is there some oil or something that will help remove mats on the face? I'm so confused. I'm thinking of just trimming his hair on his face really short so the mats don't occur in the first place. Poor guy needs a good washing.
