| Bloody Mucus in Stool Logan started having blood mucus in his stools a couple of days ago. His stools are not runny but are very soft (next thing to diarrhea). Would this have anything to do with the possible liver shunt or something else? The vet's office is closed until Tuesday. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | It could be coccidia and he needs to see a vet about it - you didn't say how old or how big he is but until you can get him in (asap) you need to keep him hydrated IT could be something else but if he's a little puppy - that's my guess - but NOTHING Should take the place of a VET VISIT.... can you find one open that you can go in as an emergency ? Most vets offer an after hours number for that very reason good luck !! |

| Sorry to hear Logan is having problems...I really have no advice, but wanted you to know that I hope he is better real soon. How old is he? Is he otherwise acting normal? Appetite okay?

Yes it sounds like Coccidia and needs to be seen by vet for fecal check and start meds such as Albon ASAP to prevent the damage this can do to the bowel lining. This is not something to take lightly but also don't get scared and panic- it happens as really all puppies carry the coccidia cells but their systems will repell it unless they are stressed or weakened and it gets the upper hand in their system. Get the baby checked and treat accordingly and all should be well - keep it drinking ( if it won't willingly drink - get pedialite and give via syringe in its mouth to keep it hydrated untill seen by vet ) If you need more help-PM me as i hate to admit it but i brought this home to my place a couple years ago when i bought a puppy and had a real time untill i learned all i could about coccidia and how to handle and treat it.

Logan is almost 10 months old and weighs a little over 3 lbs. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow. Maybe they'll be open. | |

| The vet's clinic is closed today. He is still acting like something is bothering him, although he has not pooped since yesterday morning. He walks with his tail down and his bottom sort of "hunched" - almost like he is about to poop but not quite. I can hear his tummy gurgling. I will get him to the vet tomorrow morning or sooner if he has another bloody stool. |

| check to make sure that he doesn't have some stool stuck to the hair around his opening......that will sometimes cause a "back-up". Just rinse him off with some warm soapy water to loosen it, if he does have some stuck. Good luck with your baby! |

| When did he have his last bowel movement? Have you been giving the lactulose 3x a day? Remember that the total amount you give per day is dependent on him having 2 soft stools per day. He should not be having bloody mucousy stools though. Is the blood red, red or is it more blackish? Has he been vomiting at all? If he is having diarrhea, then cut back on the total amount of lactulose per day, but continue to break the dosage up into 3x a day. If he's only going once a day, then lactulose needs to be increased. Your vet should be able to help you with this. Have you changed anything in his diet? Going to the vet would be a good idea...

| RC Hepatic LS 14 is much lower in fat than the Hill's canned, so if it is a problem with the fat, then the RC would be a better choice.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | poor baby - at least you know what it is and now he'll start feeling better - you should see that stop in a few days - but had you waited.... he could have become very sick so good for you getting him in right away !! |
