| I need some advice on ear infections I brought Sammy to a groomer near my parents' house (first time I've taken him there but went there on a friends' recommendation). She cleaned his ears and said that she thinks he has an ear infection. When we got back to my parents' I did notice him shaking his head and rubbing his ears on the carpet, something he wasn't doing before. I looked in his ears and they do look a bit flaky inside, especially his right one. I'm worried! I won't be back home for another several days to take him to his vet. Should I take him to an unfamiliar vet here by my parents'? Or is this something that can wait a few days? If so, is there something I can do in the meantime, like a home remedy to ease his discomfort until we get home? ~Lara and Sammy |

| Ear infections usually smell sour. Smell the ears if you smell something fowl I would try to find a vet to take the dog too. |

| Took your advice and smelled his ears...they don't smell sour, just oily/waxy. I think I will wait then, watch him to see if they look like they're still bothering him, and maybe take him to his vet when I get home. Thanks so much! We had dogs/cats growing up and none of them ever had ear infections...he's my first dog as an 'adult', and my first Yorkie, so I'm a bit of a worry-wart-mommy! ~Lara and Sammy |

| If there is more than a few tiny dots of dark discharge he needs to be seen. He could be in pain if it is an infection. They could just be dirty though. If it is more of a brown color (possibly smelling sweet) it could be a yeast infection and that I would wait a few days for.

| Ooo! I'm so glad you wrote! Actually, it's funny because I was even thinking that his ears smelled like cinnamon candles...waxy sweet...and yes, definitely brown colored! Thanks! I will DEFINITELY take him to see his vet when we get back home because from your description it sounds like it's a yeast infection. He's not in pain -- I've been looking and smelling his ears all evening and he doesn't seem to mind, no whimpering or crying -- but he has been shaking his head a lot since we left the groomer. Thanks again! |

| my yorkie cali had ear mites. we took her to the vet they gave her a shot 1 of 3 to help wit ridding them. and gave us some ear cleanser to use for a few weeks to help. we recently took her back to vet on saturday and they said her ears are looking waay better and in 2 weeks will be gone completly.. so in my opinion it can wait a few days. but should not be put off...not an expensive treatment either... goodluck

| Hi everyone! Back from the vet and yes, Sammy has yeast infections in both of his ears . But he was a good boy while she cleaned and medicated them and didn't fuss too much . She gave me medicated drops that I have to apply twice a day for 7-10 days, plus a cleaning solution I have to use along with cotton swabs once-a-day after 2-3 days into using the medicated drops. I'm just so glad I took him right away...and I did so and didn't wait because of all the great input I got! Thanks again for the advice and the concern! Hugs and puppy kisses! ~ Lara and Sammy |

| That is good news. Did the vet happen to tell you what causes the yeast infection and ways to prevent it from reoccurring? |

| One of the ways to help prevent it is to never get water in their ears.
