I need some advice on ear infections - Page 2 - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Yes she did...sorry, I should have mentioned it in my update.

Basically, other than possible food allergies, water is a big cause. She said to just be extra careful when I bathe him, and to tell my groomer to do the same, because some dogs are just more susceptible than others to ear infections.

She also said to make sure that my groomer gets all the hair out of the inside of his ears -- the less hair, the more easily his ears will dry and not trap water which can cause infections. She also suggested I clean his ears myself regularly with the solution she gave me and a cotton swab.

Since I adopted him at the age of 4 this past summer, I'm not sure if he had a history of ear infections. She said that if it ends up that he gets them often and seems susceptible to ear infections then I'll have to take care even when he goes out in the rain, plays in the snow, or scratches his ears while his paws are wet, muddy, or dirty.

Lara, thanks for the good update. That is some good information to know on ear care. I have read that corn is one of the major causes of yeast infections in dogs. Is Sammy by chance on a dog food with corn in it?

Sammy eats Dr. Harvey's Organic Canine Health food and I just looked at the packaging...and no corn! I don't think it happened because of a food allergy though...maybe I just need to be more diligent with his ear care. My groomer typically does a good job about pulling the hair out of his ears, but a few weeks ago he was playing in snow and maybe he got some water in his ear canal. Or maybe I just need to be more careful when I bathe him. Either way, that's good to know about the corn! Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for saying so...he's my first Yorkie and this ear infection was making me feel a little bit like I wasn't do such a good job!

LOL. Don't be so hard on yourself. Ellie has had a yeast infection in her ears. It happens.

Hi, I have five beautiful babies and I live in a very wet environment, so we used to suffer a lot with this infections. My vet gave me the cheapest trick to prevent them, and I can assure you that it works. Use a cotton swab with a little bit of alcohol and wipe the inner part of the ear as your vet told you. Do this every two weeks and the problem will disappear forever.
Try it out and I hope it helps you...

ii just got my yorkie he is a year old the woman i got him from has 10 yorkies she is a good dog breeder from what i have heard she dated my uncle anyway i love the breed so much but could not afford to pay her so she let me pay payments but his ears are horrible they smell so bad my friend is a vet tech and she said he has ear mites i was so mad that she is selling me a dog i made a appointment for him he goes tomorrow i am going to deduct what i owe her from his vet bill does anyone think i am wrong? i am just asking for some advice . THANKS

Ear mites are very common in some areas and sometimes difficult to battle. If the vet does confirm ear mites then I suggest you notify the breeder so she can treat her dogs. Since the breeder is being generous in letting you pay out the dog I don't know that I would deduct the ear treatment from the price of the dog. The breeder might offer to let you do that. It is possible the dog has a yeast ear infection which is also pretty common with some yorkies. Please keep us posted on what the vet says. Also, get some good ear cleaner from the vet so you can start keeping his ears clean. Good luck with your new fur baby.
