| Choking/gagging I am sure there is information about this out there, and I am going to check, but thought I would start a new thread for information faster. My puppy did a gagging/choking thing tonight. She would gag, nothing would come up, she wandered around, played some, but still had these hicupping sounds. She would gag a bit later, then seem fine. I never saw anything come up. I tried to look in her mouth, but she will not let me do this. She is breathing okay, has even slept some, but has me all nerved up. We do not have any emergency vet services where I live without driving an hour or so. I forgot to ask the vet I take her to what to do in an emergency, but for some reason I don't think he is very helpful off hours. I need to find that out. I should switch to someone who has emergency help. Anway...........what do you do when they are doing this gagging thing, but are breathing okay, moving around okay. If she doesn't seem all the way better tomorrow, I will call the vet. |

| I wish I had some advice for you but don't. But my10 1/2 year old collie seems to do this as well. It's gone on for a couple of years. She'll gag and kinda make a choking sound like she's got a hairball or something but nothing comes up and she seems fine. It happens like once a day maybe twice. I asked the vet and they said everything seems fine with her but I do worry about it sometimes. Hope someone else has some better insight. |

| Ellie gags sometimes. Last time it went on for about 10 or 20 minutes. I really don't know what caused it and I don't have any advice for you. If this is still going on today, please talk to the vet.

| Is it a true gag???? I would have your baby evaluated for a collapsing trachea or reverse sneezing. has it happened more than once?

| Lilly's choking She has never done this before. We had just come in from out side, and I wonder if she had tried to eat a leaf. She loves to dig in the leaves. She has acted fine today, so I am going to just watch her. Another thing she did that I have never seen her do is digging. She tried to "dig" a hole in the floor, and then the couch. That real fast, frantic type digging. What is that all about? Lori |

| My dog does the same thing. My Jambo is almost 4 months old and of course he is always chewing on something he really shouldn't. I noticed him gagging/hacking/sneezing/wheezing before but I figured he had a hair ball. Once after a drink of water he did this for a good few minutes which scared the hell out of me. I also noticed that he has a tendency to lick his paws. I freaked out when someone I knew suggested that it may be kennel cough. He hasn't really been around many dogs and I was worried as well as a little miffed as to why my vet had not suggested a bordetella vaccine. I took a video of him hacking so I could show the vet rather than trying to possibly incorrectly explain the symptoms. The vet did not think it was kennel cough. He said it could be a tracheal issue, heart/respiratory issue and prescribed him cough medicine to see if it would go away. I noticed that Jambo would hack usually after a drink of water and sometime after some excitement/activity. It wasn't constant and I only gave him 1/2 dosage of the cough medicine because I thought it was a little strong. I also went to the natural foods store right after seeing the vet and got him some raw food along with some natural supplements to see if it was a dietary thing. I have taken his toys away that he bites and tears at including his nylabone. I also stopped giving him Missing Link and Forti Flora which my vet had prescribed him when I asked about giving him vitamins. The holistic nutritionist I met at the natural foods store scolded me for giving him these things. The vet followed up a day later (one day and he's supposed to completely recovered?) and told me that he should have a chest x-ray. I asked him if it could be that he had allergies. He flatly said no, not sure why. So far,I have caught him doing it a few times but it seems to have gotten better, not sure. I think I will get him a chest x-ray (different vet for 2nd opinion) just to be sure it is nothing serious. I would love to hear more about this from everyone. |

He also does the gagging thing sometimes too, the vet says he is fine, its just a "reverse sneeze" and he said its nothing to worry about (not that I'm saying thats definitely what's wrong with your puppy, but that has been my experience ) Hope you find out its nothing like I did !

| I have been dealing with my puppy doing this since I got him at 9 weeks. He has been on 3 antiobiotics and still coughing/gagging/wheezing. They diagnosed him with kennel cough/bronchitis. They have listened to his heart and did not hear any signs of a heart condition. They mentioned collapsed trachea. We put off having xrays yesterday because of financial reasons. I feel like he might have gotten a cold and it turned into pneumonia. Because of his age, I think it has taken him a long time to recover. I have heard that kennel cough can take up to 4 weeks to go away. Someone mentioned nebulizer treatments, keeping them extra warm at night. Yoda is taking a steriod to help. I have been very frustrated and tired of worrying about this. I have not slept well since he started this!
