Let me explain more....

When I had my D40, I wanted to use the $100 Nikkor 50mm SO badly...but it won't auto focus on the D40 bc the D40 requires lenses that have their *own* focus motor to auto focus (you can, however, manually focus). So, for me to use a Prime lens that would auto focus on my D40, I had to go to a Sigma 30mm and the lens was about $460. This lens had its own focus motor though....

See what I mean about limitations? To some, that's no big deal though....

I'm not sure this would be a big issue for me. I would prefer to have one with the focus motor, but for the extra $$$ to buy one that has it.... I don't know. I would like to have one capable of video, and now I'm hooked on the idea of that tilt view on the D5000, but otherwise is the D5000 the same as the D40 or D60?

This is all really hard to explain via typing...bc it gets really hard to explain what happens visually. But, the kit lens w/ the D5000 is an 18-55mm lens...just basic, nothing special - not a lens you'd really go out and buy on its own, per se. It will totally fine to learn on though, and figure things out with etcetera. That's why some people will say, just buy the camera body alone, and then get the lenses you really *want*. Skip the kit lens.

Depends on BrowniesMom's lens...I'd see what she likes/dislikes. It's a nice lens. But, bc it's a Macro, it may be tough to use w/ the doggies bc if they move, *boom*, they're out of focus. That said, a Macro Zoom would be a super fun lens. You'd need to know if this lens has its own motor (I think with sigma lenses, this is designated by HFS or HFX or something like that?) (in Nikon lenses, you look for AFS lenses if you need the motor IN the lens).

No, the D5000 is not the same as the D40/60, def. not...I probably confused you, sorry. The D5000 is still beyond the D60 -- I mean, it has almost all that the D90 has, except for the movie quality and the focus motor issue.

Another option would be to buy a used D80....a great camera...but I don't actually know if it does video or not.

I'm sorry if this is confusing...but it really *is* this confusing when you're trying to buy a camera. Been there!

Yes you are right it does not have a motor in the body. So i would need one in the len's. is there a 50mm with a motor?

No, and that's what stinks. I don't know *why* Nikon is not making their 50mm in an AFS lens, it's so lame.

You'd have to get the 30mm Sigma , which is what I bought for the D40 (and still have) - it's a nice lens, but not cheap at all. Or, here is a 50mm in Sigma . Or, this Nikon 35mm *might* be interesting...looks like it's AF-S?

That's why you're able to be such a huge help to the rest of us!

I still think the D5000 is the better choice for me both because of features and $$$$. But, I'm going to keep reading before I buy next month. If I find a sale on a D90 that puts it in my price range, I may decide to get it so that I'll have all the possible goodies. At least now it's narrowed down to these two - which is MUCHO better than where I was before.

I've been reading, reading, reading and talking with Browniesmom trying to learn more about lenses. I just think I'm getting it when something pops up & I get confused again.

Is there a big difference between the 55-200mm lens Breny bought and the 70-300mm lens? Which would be better for my needs?

Ann, what lens did you use to get that shot of Wylie?

Both are good lenses The 300 is just a further distance.

I was looking at the camera I have now, & just realized it has video capability. Where have I been?

I am glad your asking questions too!!! I am sooooooooooo confused when it comes to the lenses!!!

I will tell you I only took a couple pics with the lens in the kit and put the new one on. I like to be able to zoom when the dogs are not close to me and that way I can get better shots if they don't know I'm taking the pic

But I am so so confused on the lenses. So far I love this camera tho!!! WAY better than my normal point and shoots and I thought they were great!

That is great to hear!! I've pretty much talked myself into the same camera you bought. I just don't think I'd be happy with anything less. Do you have to manually focus the extra lens you bought? I used to have a Canon 35mm and I had to do that manually on every shot I took - I don't remember it being that bad. Of course, this was 20+ years ago & I understood technology then.

Those are some great pics you're taking! Very crisp, with the blurry background I like so much.
