| Weaning baby kittens I have a 3 week old baby kitten and the mother doesnt seem to be nursing it as much and Im trying to introduce it to food gradually. I have taken canned food and mixed it with water and it wouldnt eat it. I have mixed the canned food with kitten formula and it wouldnt eat it, I put it on my finger and put it up to the kittens mouth and it licked it once but wouldnt anymore. What am I doing wrong and do kittens take naturally to weaning. I have lost 3 kittens out of this litter and this one is going to the vet tomorrow for a checkup. Im just nervous about weaning this baby

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Sadly there may be something wrong with it Alot of kitten's just don't make it. If the mother doesn't really want to nurse she know's. You can try bottle feeding. The kitten to young to wean or be eating canned food. Good luck at the vet. |

| I must have read some bad info on the net because it said you could gradually start weaning at 3 weeks. My Mother cat is still nursing it but she takes 1-2 hour breaks and it was worrying me

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I don't know i have alway's let them nurse til at least 5 week's & i still didn't push Can food on them unless they wanted it. The last litter they still nursed off of there mother til 10 week's while eating some canned & dry. I think the longer the better. i do it this way. i guess some people start weaning at 3 weeks to get them new Homes at 5 -6 week's. Even if they are starting to eat the canned they should be nursing or bottle fed at 3 week's. If the mother doesn't really want to nurse this early especially since it doesn't want the canned i would Try a bottle. |

| Awwwwwwwww! It touched my heart to hear how determined you are to save this little kitten. Years ago I found a tiny baby trapped in a storm drain; I flagged down a utility truck to lift the grate for me and searched in vain for his momma. Anyway, I wound up taking him home and keeping him for 15 years! His eyes weren't even open yet, so I bottle fed him formula and needed to rub his tummy regularly so that he would 'go' (in the absence of his mom, who would have licked him to stimulate this function). What a mess! I remember this continuing for many weeks.....I supplemented until the he was able to eat enough solid food to satisfy me that he was doing ok. Best of luck to you!

| I raised a litter of 5 last fall and I used a syringe. (if the momma wont feed them I guess) If you do that make sure you take a cotton ball to its bottom so it can use the bathroom. GoodLuck

| My Vet said the kitten looked good for 3 weeks. He gave me a flea preventative to put on her and the mother. He said fleas can kill a baby kitten and her and the mother had them. He wormed her also and gave me some kitten milk and an eye dropper

| So far so good. Ive been to the vet twice with her. Once for a check up and once to get meds for an eye infection she has. The vet said she looked good so far and at the last appointment she had gained weight. She is going on 5 weeks so we will be starting the weaning process soon so IM nervous about that since so far she wouldnt take any kind of food when the mom wasnt nursing her well. We are holding out hope though that it will all go well. Thank you for asking about her. She is such a cutie calico kitty

| Okay now shes 5 weeks and I still cant get her to eat from a saucer. I have been bottle feeding her because the mother is barely nursing her. Got any tips for me? Ive tried giving her canned catfood, baby food, formula, cows milk from the saucer and sh e wont take it. I put her with the mother when I give the mother canned food also
