| I am so MAD right now!!!!!!!!! I am so mad right now I could stab someone!!!!! I have been looking for a job for awhile and finally found the perfect one!!! Everything was going great! The directors and office managers loved me and wanted to hire me right away. The only thing they had to do was to check my references....and this where the story goes bad. I left my last job because of an illness in my family. My grandmother has Alzheimers and we did not want to put her in a home so I volunteered to stay at home with her until we found a nurse for her. So I quit my job, and was at home with her for over 5 months. I started looking for a new job and found one close to home and with all the benefits that I wanted. I gave them 6 references ( I have ALWAYS been a good employee and have never done anything wrong) my last job gave them a bad reference!!! I cant bleieve it - the manager that they spoke to said that they would not hire me again!! FOR WHAT REASON??? I have no idea!!! I was one of their best employees, and though I know they were upset for my leaving, I had to for my grandmother. I had heard in the past this manager giving past employees bad references, but this is ridiculous. There is no reason for that at all. So now it is up in the air - the human resources for the new job said that they would contact me later today. But I dont know, I cant even think straight! I am soooo mad right now!! |

| Does HR at the new job know the whole story of why you left the previous job? Often when we call past employers for references all we are allowed to ask is if the employee is eligible for rehire. There are many, many reasons why someone may say no so it's always best that the employee be upfront with potential employers. Hopefully HR will take everything into consideration when they make their decision. Do you have other people at that previous job that could give you 'good' references?

| Yes, I explained everything to them upfront. I know you never know what can happen so I like to tell them everything. There is another manager fro mthe same company that is listed with the references and she would give a good reference. I really hope that it works out - I could completely see someone saying that - but to say it for no reason? That is ridiculous and slander. |

| Well, anyone with some time in HR knows better than to disqualify someone on the opinion of one disgruntled manager, especially if all the other references are outstanding. Hang in there and good luck!

| I would call HR at your old job and tell them exactly what is happening. He/she will put a stop to it quickly!

| I work in the Human Resources department for a hospital. We only verify dates of employment and position - for legal reasons. I attended a seminar that stated if we give more, we are subject to litigation.

My furkids Donating Member | I don't know the NY laws but, here in mass all they can say is that you worked for them. What he did to you is slander! I would document everything and, talk to a lawyer. This is the reason why (in mass) alot of former employers won't give out info on their (former) employees. The other thing...if you do decided to get a lawyer would the people that told you that he was bragging about what he did, back you up....Probably not...in fear of losing there own job....My Mom has a saying that when the rubber hits the road your friends are nowhere in site...Good luck with this and just remember...what goes around comes around and usually harder...he'll get his for what he said about you..
