Does HR at the new job know the whole story of why you left the previous job? Often when we call past employers for references all we are allowed to ask is if the employee is eligible for rehire. There are many, many reasons why someone may say no so it's always best that the employee be upfront with potential employers. Hopefully HR will take everything into consideration when they make their decision. Do you have other people at that previous job that could give you 'good' references?
