I don't know the NY laws but, here in mass all they can say is that you worked for them. What he did to you is slander! I would document everything and, talk to a lawyer. This is the reason why (in mass) alot of former employers won't give out info on their (former) employees. The other thing...if you do decided to get a lawyer would the people that told you that he was bragging about what he did, back you up....Probably not...in fear of losing there own job....My Mom has a saying that when the rubber hits the road your friends are nowhere in site...Good luck with this and just remember...what goes around comes around and usually harder...he'll get his for what he said about you..
