When I was a kid, I sat outside a lot, since I lived in fairly secluded country. Once I moved to the city in college, it's all that my friends and I would do! Porch sitting is such a wonderful pasttime, no matter where you are! Now I'm just sad because I don't have a porch anymore to sit on, but a balcony of an apartment. It works, I guess, but nothing beats a long porch and a long cool drink. So glad you started this thread, makes me want to reminisce.

Yes, we do...everyday! We don't have a front porch per say but we do have a big front deck and a lower level patio that overlook the lake. We enjoy sitting outside and listening to the quiet...we get to watch the boats and wildlife and visit with the neighbors as they walk down to the lake. We're in town but it's so quiet here that it's like being in the country and we love it!

When I was growing up we had a big front porch with a swing and someone was always sitting out there. I don't think I've ever owned a home that didn't have a front porch...for me...it's a requirement!

Are you related to me LOL! You didn't grow up in Pickens County Alabama did you! Yep we did all those things...I remember my cousin and I catching fire flies (we called the lightening bugs ) and then we snuck them in Nomie's house while we took a bath and somehow they all got out I so remember us panicking and trying to catch them again before Nomie and Grandaddy knew we brought them inside

You're right! We called them Lightening Bugs too. I'd forgotten. We used to catch them and put them in mason jars to watch them for awhile! So much fun, so many wonderful memories! I can just picture you running around trying to retrieve all of the "evidence" before your Grandparents got home...hee, hee!!

Yep, were called "porch-monkies" in the south. I grew up in my grandparents home in WV. with a big wrap around porch. (well the front and two sides, but not the back) I use to skate around that porch. We had three swings that I had to manuver around. I had a big porch that was the entire length of the house when we moved to TN. in 1999. We bought two swings and had the porch screened in so we could sit out without being eaten alive. We moved from there and came back to CA. in 2001. Haven't had a porch since, but I don't miss it here because we have a lot more to do now.

We got lucky as far as the bugs go...... we have a pretty steady breeze at all times so really don't have a mosquito problem. Now, if you're out in my husband's shop, out of the breeze, then you would get eaten up!

Tatum's funny to watch while you're sitting on the porch. She's always looking for grasshoppers and chasing them so we get to watch the grasshoppers dodge her and her bounce around after them.

Isn't it great when Grandma and Grandpas give the grandkids such great memories...those glider swings are so fun...I think these kinds of memories are getting fewer and far between for grandkids, it's a darn shame...

That porch sounds awesome!!!...You can only get a porch like that on an older home, don't make them like that anymore....

If my husband and sons are ever home during a storm when I am not there they like to call me and tell me I'm missing it. Bonnie loves to sit on the front porch too!

lol...Every time we have a storm coming that's the first place we go....we watch the sky turn darker and darker, the winds start kicking up and we just sit there til the rain starts coming in sideways and forces us in....

I havent done that for YEARS, then I was at my moms in New Mexico and there are NO mosquitoes out there, it was gorgeous and we took a glass of wine, 2 chairs and sat out there and watched people walking their dogs by and a thunderstorm rolling in (you can see for MILES in all directions out there so you watch thunderstorms from a distance actually come in towards you). Since you cant really grow grass out there cuz of the dry climate (you can but you have to water it all the time and people cant afford that) yards are very small so houses are very close together... people were sooooo friendly!!

Where I live now (in a townhouse) in New England, some are friendly but most people are just too busy or unobservant to even bother talking to someone else! I do sit on my deck at night a lot though and either talk to my neighbor or my dogs or read ... just to enjoy the fresh air!
