| who has a big dog!?? My hubby is thinking of getting a lab or a German Shepherd. I have sat a lab before but hated cleaning up all the hair!! I have hard wood floors, so I have to sweep every hr when I have the lab. each time I sweep, I have enough hair to make a small yorkie! So my question is, how do you deal with the hair? Can you take them to the groomer like are long haired furbabys? If so, dose it help with all the hair falling of them? or is there some other way to help stop all the hair falling off them so much? |

| yes you can take them to the groomers. they can shave them as well. although it does look a little awkard. They'll still conitue to shed a little but that's about it. and another thing they make shampoo specificially to help prevent shedding. hope this helps

| my other furbaby is a rott-shepard mix (I call her my rotten shepard ) The hair is bad, very bad, and honestly i brush mine once a week and my dad does her once a week too (with a shedding brush) I have the "no-shed" shampoo and that doesn't work. there is just a lot of hair and a lot of cleaning up.... To be honest though, there is nothing like the love of a big dog, i wouldn't trade my Alexis for the world, she was my original furbaby and is just that, a big baby. The love she gives is well worth the extra sweeping hope this helps |

| We give our lab mix Lanatone (fatty acid supplement) on her food every day and it really cuts down on the shedding. Of course, when Spring rolls around, it's a natural thing for dogs to shed their winter coat. Ever considered a Boxer? They make awsome pets and their hair is short. |

| This is ironic because we have a big black lab (Luke - who weighs 99lbs) and a German Shepard (Sophie). They both shed, but labs shed more. We have had Labs all of our lives and love them. Their hair, that is another story! Both our big dogs sleep inside at night and every morning, we sweep a pile of hair (yes, about the size of Mojo). We brush and groom often, but they still shed. I haven't found any good shampoo for them....so if anyone has ideas or if you found anything, please post (I will do the same). There are pills and such they can take for help with shedding, but we are the type of people that are more all natural.....it is normal for them to shed and we don't know what the long term affect of taking a pill like that would do, so we have never tried it. Good luck!

We have a chocolate lab and she loves our yorkies they get along great. But, she is an outside dog. She has a huge insulated dog house with lots of hay in it and 2 huge 5 gallon waters. She loves it outside and the only time she wants to come in is when fireworks are going off. Other than that she stays outside. So I don't have all of the hair to deal with. Good Luck in your decision. Here is a link to some pictures I just posted of them playing. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=54258&page=2

| We don't have any big dogs at this time but we love them. My daugther has fallen completely in LOVE with Great Danes from being around them at dog shows. I have a "feeling" as she comes closer to her teen years that we may add one into our little world here in the future...hee hee. We've looked into ways on how to build proper runs for such huge dogs. I'm also putting my "show mobile" aka "the blaze mobile, chevy blazer" up for sale and I'm looking for a van. It will take time and money to get her into Danes...but if she continues to show the interest I want her to have it. We saw the most beautiful one recently at a show with a little girl who was maybe 11. The dog was so huge compared to the girl, but man did they work together nicely. I think they are truly the gentle giants. If I'm not careful my daughter is going to turn our property into an all breed training center |

I know it just depends on where you live. We only have a couple of months of cold weather here and it doesn't get that cold. There have been a few nights where we have had to bring her in because it has gotten really cold but, other than that she stays outside where she absolutely loves it. Her dog house and the hay help plus she puts on quite a bit of weight as well. She could get out of our fence if she wanted to. I let her out every so often, she just runs around for a few minutes and right back in. She has it made. If it weren't for the hair and her just not wanting to come in she would be inside more.

| Since we're talking about big dogs...wanted to mention that my mom has two boxers...Rufus and Elmo. Elmo who is 8 was recently diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder and is losing weight by the day. They've done all they can for him...He's hanging in there but isn't ever going to be the same. Please keep him in your prayers. He's a sweet sweet boy. |

Poor Guy. My son has a white boxer, and a yorkie best buds. My sister just had to have her Great Dane put to sleep a few months back she was 14 and she is starting to look at rescue groups thinking about adopting another one. Hers was deaf. Don't know if she want's to go that route again or not. They are great dogs. When Ethan was maybe 9 or 10 months old we were at her house and China came up to him and he grabbed her on both sides of her face and she just slobbered all over him and of course he laughed the whole time.

| Olivia Kharis- I can't help you much with how to deal with the hair but I know there are ways to cut down on it. I think some of the smoother coated shedding breeds are groomed alot with slicker brushes and de-shedding brushes like we used to use on our horses to strip off the dead hair. My mom's boxers shed a little but I never notice any hair on her furniture, ect. But knowing my mom she vacuums it alot. We had a blue heeler (cattle dog) when I was younger and she only came in the garage and basement, but she DID shed all over the couch that was in the basement. My cairn/mixed terrier as a child shedded and so did my australian sheperd. I noticed him shedding alot more when he wasn't as active though...his hip was broken once and he had to lay in the living room on a bed spread for several weeks. Alot of hair came off him just by laying on it constantly I think. I loved all on my mom's boxer yesterday who is sick (the one I mentioned in a post above) and hardly any hairs got on my dark blue t-shirt. I've really taken a liking to some larger breeds. I guess by being around them alot lately, it's brought back child hood memories for me. Maybe someday... This is my Mom and Elmo taken couple months ago. He doens't look like the same dog now...he is so skinny towards his rear; almost looks like he is "shrinking" in his mid section. Very sad for her and my step dad. |

aww he is cute! but I dont think I will want a boxer, they remind me of pugs and I dislike pugs. I dont like how they behave and etc. No affends to any one who has one. Just I dont like there behavers. I have not been around boxers so they might not act like a pug...but just looking at them reminds me of one... I am trying to talk my hubby into getting smaller dog, like another yorkie lol but he wants a big dog.. so maybe he will wait till he gets out of the army and get are home, so we will have a bigger yard from him/her to play in. Sorry to hear your moms dogs is sick, Hope he is better soon! sending prays your way!

My sister has a whippet. Now talk about a sweet "mid sized" dog! He can go from playing rough in the yard to a big ol' pussy cat lounging around the house in a flash! He has a very "human like" personality. But he's a sight hound and a tall fence is a MUST. A sight hound will go after anything that moves no matter how far they have to chase it. But on the other hand thats why he's so much fun to play ball with. BTW, he lives with a 4 lb male yorkie and they get along great.
