| ![]() I use the word ma'am all the time but have only started since I moved to Georgia (and yes I get called ma'am). It doesn't really bother me anymore, in fact I would be shocked if someone didn't use it. Also all my friends children refer to me with a "Miss" in front of my name which I also LOVE. When I was a child I was never allowed to refer to my parents friends with their first name unless we had known them for years and then it was a rare incident. To this day I still call them Mr or Mrs (old habits die hard).

LOL!! I'm mostly Irish, and we have flat butts too! My half sister, who looks a lot like my German descent step-father, would always call me "pancake butt" growing up. ![]() ![]()

| ![]() Sorry, got off track from the OP. I lived in the South for a while and picked up that habit of calling everyone sir and ma'am. Didn't realize "ma'am" could be offensive. Might have to rethink that one. Since moving back up North, I really do miss the South. The food is really good. Unfortunately, I am trapped in Pennsylvania Dutch country - the hometown food is TERRIBLE!!! ![]()

I have to tell a funny story. When I was in my late teens I was working for a company and met a lady, I asked her name and she said Miss Kathy. So I said ok, nice to meet you, may I ask your last name? She said Kathy. Long story short her name was Kathy Cathy (she married a Mr. Cathy --not too sure of the correct spelling) she had a lot of fun with me... in my mind I did not call her Miss Kathy ![]()

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | ![]() I remember the first time I got called Ma’am, it really shook me up. I was appropriate, but it still bothered me. Yesterday, I got called "Miss", so now I’m wondering if I’m in that group of women where you’re so old, people act like you’re young, calling us “girls” or saying we are xx years “young.” Never have liked to be called “honey” or “sweetie” by a waitress, I don’t know why that bothered me so much, maybe in the nursing home it will be okay.

| ![]() After I hit 30, Miss started to seem a bit silly but I wasn't a Mrs. Now, at 39, Miss is just ridiculous to me, still not a Mrs. and ma'am makes me feel old. So I'm going with Ms. :-) |

![]() ![]() And, really, I rarely get called Ma'am or Miss. Come to think of it. I just don't hear that a lot, maybe we in Maryland are not southern enough. I think the only time I get called ma'am is if I'm speaking to a technical person over the phone or ordering food, etc. Maybe I'm still too young ![]()

| ![]() Ma'am is a southern (or military)thing, and a title with a first name is incorrect, except in the south. When, if, someone calls me ma'am, I tell them what my name is...not ma'am. I live in GA, but, I am a true yankee!!
