I use the word ma'am all the time but have only started since I moved to Georgia (and yes I get called ma'am).
It doesn't really bother me anymore, in fact I would be shocked if someone didn't use it.
Also all my friends children refer to me with a "Miss" in front of my name which I also LOVE. When I was a child I was never allowed to refer to my parents friends with their first name unless we had known them for years and then it was a rare incident. To this day I still call them Mr or Mrs (old habits die hard).
