| Hamster vs. gerbil, etc. Please help me out here. My children want to get a hamster. I have heard that they sometimes bite. They had guinea pigs and took real good care of them. They loved them dearly. We lost them a couple of weeks ago to a terrible accident. They don't want to replace the guinea pigs, so they want to try hamsters. Does anyone have any suggestions? They love to hold and play with them alot. Any info on gerbils, rats, etc. would be appreciated, too. Thanks

| We have had both hamsters and gerbils. Gerbils seem tamer and are larger than hamsters. I haven't had either with a Yorkie and don't know how they will react since the are Ratters.

| I would let them get a Hamster. But, make sure it's a male. Females go in to heat once a month, that's why they bite. Males are great. My son had one who would sit in his shirt pocket when he was playing his drums, or going for a ride on his bike. Charger was a long haired Hamster. They really are sweet.

| Are gerbils more like rats? Also, are dwarf hamsters okay? Or are they meaner? Are short or long haired better? Or are they any difference. We had 2 female short haired guinea pigs and they were very sweet.

| We had both gerbils and hampsters...and guinea pigs. The problem that we had with both males and females gerbils and hampsters is that they did bite. And they bit hard! My daughter became afraid to hold them and my son took a little longer, but then he did too. The other problem we had is that their life span is so short, that the kids get attached....and then we had to have many funerals over the last few years. We have a little pet cemetary in our back yard! It was heart breaking each time! That is when I finally gave in and got a puppy.....and we are in love with our furbabies now!!! Good luck to you!

| We had long haired hamsters but they didn't like to be held and we couldn't keep them alive, they kept getting sick. We would replace everything, including the cage but it didn't matter. We have a guinea pig now. He's much more friendly and alive. Don't get me wrong, I like hamsters, we just had better luck with guinea pigs.

| I would choose a G-Pig any day of the week over hamsters and gerbils. Maybe you could get the longer haired ones for a switch? Boy hamsters have a PACKAGE that drags around behind them UGHHHHHHH. We have all three and I really don't like any but the pigs. The pigs will actually become friendly. Not to mention catching a loose g-pig is WAYYYYY easier then the other 2.

| I think that getting a hamster would be great. But get a male because that is what my Brother has and it seems to never byte at all. But I dont reccomend rats, because my friend had a pet rat and it would pull clothes through its cage and chew holes in them. But I like hamsters. Try to get a glass cage though, like a fish tank, because they seem to like to chew the metal bar cages, and thats not always good. Hope that this helps.
