We had both gerbils and hampsters...and guinea pigs. The problem that we had with both males and females gerbils and hampsters is that they did bite. And they bit hard! My daughter became afraid to hold them and my son took a little longer, but then he did too. The other problem we had is that their life span is so short, that the kids get attached....and then we had to have many funerals over the last few years. We have a little pet cemetary in our back yard! It was heart breaking each time! That is when I finally gave in and got a puppy.....and we are in love with our furbabies now!!! Good luck to you!
